The Silfra fissure is a water-filled crack between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, where the two continents drift apart from each other. Water travels from the Langjökull glacier through porous lava rock during a journey that takes between 30 and 100 years before seeping into the fissure.

With this experience, a professional guide will take you to Silfra, a fissure between North America and Europe in Thingvellir National Park that marks where the two continental plates are slowly drifting apart. You and your group will get a chance to spend around 40 minutes in the water before heading back to shore.

Snorkeling in a fissure caused by two tectonic plates drifting apart is something you can't do everyday! Silfra is the name of a big 'crack' stretching parallel to the North American and a micro-plate called Hreppar that broken off from the Eurasian plate. Silfra has world-renowned clear and drinkable water with over 100 metre visibility daily. This is unlike any tour you can do in Iceland and is something you can't do anywhere else in the world. We are the only company to offer wetsuit and drysuit. This means members of your group can book different options and still be together in the water. We include photos and usually take around 40-100 photos as standard depending on the size of the tour and you will be able to download them after at least a few days. We always have small groups, 6 people per guide. This allows for a better and more personal feel. If you have a group of 7 or more you can be together preparing your equipment but in the water some of you will be separate.

Being able to snorkel in the Silfra fissure is a privilege that mother nature literally opened up for us. Silfra is a big 'crack' in the ground located in Thingvellir on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge formed as two tectonic plates move apart from each other. The benefits of choosing the wetsuit option is you can dive down and have the most unique perspective, seeing above and below the water. This choice is popular for scuba divers who do not have the required certifications for the scuba dive. If you're not a confident swimmer then the drysuit can be a better option. Prior experience snorkeling/ diving will help you greatly to dive down but is not necessary. You can book the drysuit option on another listing for you or other people in your group for the same time tour. We always have small groups, 6 people per guide. This allows for a more closer and personal feel. If you have a group of 7 or more you can be together preparing your equipment but in the water some of you will be separate.

Explore one of the best dive sites in the world where you can dive in crystal clear- and even drinkable water. The glacier water filters for about 30 to 100 years through hardened lava rock from Langijökull glacier. This creates an easy slow moving current to help you along your way when diving as it flows in the direction we dive. The current also ensures a constant steady flow of clear glacial spring water, ensuring that it's constantly clear. The depth of the fissure is about 18 meters at the deepest point and from the beginning to the end the cathedral is about 100 meters long. You can see right across from one end to the other. Gazing through this section of Silfra is one of the most dramatic views underwater. Silfra Lagoon is the last section of Silfra and this is the place where the visibility is most apparent, as the Lagoon is the widest unobstructed area.
