The Basics

The best way to explore Old Town Square is on foot—join the crowds wandering and sipping coffee in streetside cafés, admire the intricate architecture, or join a group walking tour of the city to benefit from the experience of an expert guide. Most Prague tours pass through the square on the way to nearby attractions such as Wenceslas Square, the Charles Bridge, or the Jewish Quarter. For a more personalized experience, opt for a small-group or private tour, or combine an Old Town walking tour with a visit to Prague Castle, a sightseeing cruise along the Vltava River, or a traditional Czech lunch.

Prague Highlights Bike Tour with Old Town & Prague Castle
This was a fantastic tour. I ended up being the only one on the tour. The day before the company had gotten ahold of me and asked me if I would be willing to take the English speaking tour later in the day as the one in the morning just had me. Unfortunately I was unable to do that as it would have overlapped with another tour I was taking, so I was expecting them to cancel me. I was a bit disappointed, but to my surprise they ended up calling the tour guide and she agreed to do it with just me. And I did not have to pay extra. I basically got a private tour and it was fantastic! Plus my guide was very kind and patient as there were a few times that I had to atop and push the bike up the hill as it was just to steep for me to make it. She took me to some amazing places, and was incredibly knowledgeable. Even pointed out some little secret spots to take advantage of that are unknown to most tourists. At the end of the tour she gave me her card and we were talking about coffee and she told me that if I wanted, we could meet up later in the week and she would take me to a couple of great coffee places that are mostly know to the locals. So this tour was amazing, and I also know it would have been amazing even if there was a big group of us. My guides name was Zuzana and she definitely went above and beyond for me. It’s a great tour to do.

Thorough download of Prague's history

Prague Old Town New Town and Jewish Quarter Morning Tour
The walking tour, while a bit long, covered all the highlights in the Old Town, New Town, and Jewish Quarter and avoided other big tour groups for the most part. Our tour guide Mike, was great at giving us a download on Prague's history while explaining the significance of all of the sights on the tour. I highly recommend spending the morning learning and walking from Mike! The tour ends in the Old Town square, just in time to see the Astronomical Clock in action and grab lunch.

When to Get There

Most tour guides time their arrival at Old Town Square to see the astronomical clock display, which occurs at the turn of every hour, but you can admire the square’s grand architecture anytime. It can get extremely busy during the day, especially during the peak summer months, so opt for an early morning visit to avoid crowds. Visit the square after dark to see the buildings dramatically illuminated, or stop by during the festive holiday season, when the square hosts the city’s main Christmas market.
