A Spooky City Guide to Prague
Find out what goes bump in the night with Prague's paranormal investigator and tour guide Victoria Burton.
Most Prague river cruises sail past the picturesque Kampa Island, or you can join a city tour on foot—or by bike, e-bike, e-scooter, or three-wheeled motorcycle to take in what is considered one of the most beautiful urban islands in the world. With its postcard-ready views of the Charles Bridge and street-art-heavy Lennon Wall, the island is also a popular stop on photography tours; gourmands can join a food tour that stops at the clutch of restaurants on the northern tip of the island. Independent travelers can instead opt to stop at the island during a hop-on hop-off bus tour and relax over a picnic lunch at the park on the south end.
Kampa Island is located along the Vltava River in Malá Strana, an easy walk from most of the area’s main sights. From the Old Town, walk across the Charles Bridge which links to the northern tip of the island.
Visit Kampa Island in the summer to take advantage of its scenic city park, or duck into the contemporary art museum to escape the winter cold. In the evening, the restaurants and cafés on the northern half of the island come to life with locals and tourists.
Kampa Island is home to the Kampa Museum, which focuses on modern art from central Europe. One of the most famous sights on the island is the three giant bronze baby sculptures located near the museum entrance—the sculptures were designed by controversial artist David Černý, who also created 10 other baby sculptures which can be seen crawling up the Zizkov TV Tower. A more whimsical art installation is the yellow penguins by the Cracking Art Group that stand in a line along a metal beam over the Vltava River and light up at night.
