The Basics

The neighborhood is a must-see for travelers who want to walk in the footsteps of the founding fathers. Highlights include Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the National Constitution Center, the Betsy Ross House, Christ Church, and Carpenters' Hall. Elfreth's Alley is one of the oldest continuously inhabited residential streets in the country, lined with centuries-old homes.

Bus tours, many via open-top, double-decker buses, skirt the boundaries of Old City, but some of the landmarks are on narrow streets or in courtyards best accessible on a walking tour. Tour guides fill visitors in on the life and times of Philly's most famous resident, Benjamin Franklin, while stopping at city landmarks. Horse-drawn carriage tours are another popular option, allowing visitors to travel like their historic compatriots.

No Hop Off Hop On, still a good tour

Philadelphia Hop-On Hop-Off City Tour
Due to Covid there was no Hop Off Hop On, which is understandable, however Viator should have disclosed that important fact. The tour was still enjoyable. Drove by all important sites. Had a chance to decide what we wanted to see and go on a more detailed tour.

Our guide was excellent!! However due to Covid, you cannot get off and back on the bus. You get on and travel around. It is excellent information though and our guide was very knowledgeable

Philadelphia Hop-On Hop-Off City Tour
The tour was very informative. We took it to help share our city with a visitor. We learn a lot we weren’t aware of before. The guide was professional and entertaining. I recommend it to anyone considering a tour of Philly.

Philadelphia Hop-On Hop-Off City Tour
Ted was very knowledgeable. Knew his stuff but the seediness was pretty low key. Thought it would be a bit darker!!! We had an extra long tour. A bit more walking than the 90 min suggestion. But we went by the usual suspects!!! All was 👍 good

Next time let him eat his sandwich first.

Philadelphia Hop-On Hop-Off City Tour
I liked it, BUT the tour guide didn't go into enough detail about the historical sites. He also didn't talk about any African American historical sites at all which was diasapointing. I had to hop off and read about those on my own. His focus seemed to be on his Philly cheese steak sandwich because that's what he talked about the most. He was missing his lunch to give us a tour and he wasn't too happy about it. The driver was excellent. She did a great job.

I throughly enjoyed our first guide but not our second. He laughed at everything he said. Got on my nerves. But he was great at protecting us from the tree branches. Would do again.

Great tour of Philadelphia ... I took my nephew visiting from New Mexico and he loved! It was very in depth for an hour and a half but gave a lot of information

It was great! Really enjoyed our tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and funny. Ducking from the trees was fun

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Old City is a don’t-miss for colonial history buffs and first-time Philly visitors.

  • Visitors can skip the (often long) line for the Liberty Bell and view the famous national symbol through the Independence Visitor Center side window.

  • The historic cobblestone streets can make the area difficult to access for strollers and wheelchairs.
