If you love people watching, love fountains, and love the history of skateboarding, then chances are you’ll love Love Park when visiting Philadelphia. Officially known as JFK Plaza, the nickname is derived from the iconic “LOVE” sculpture that graces the downtown park. Originally constructed for the nation’s bicentennial in 1976, the sculpture lasted only two years before its temporary removal from the park. It wasn’t until the Chairman of the Philadelphia Art Commission purchased the sculpture and returned it to the park that it was once again open to the public. Though the sculpture is smaller than you’d originally think, what isn’t small is the level of crowds all waiting to snap a photo. Seemingly as iconic as the Liberty Bell and a modern symbol of the city, the sculpture is an artsy, feel-good centerpiece in the City of Brotherly Love. The sculpture, its crowds, and onlookers aside, Love Park is famous as an urban birthplace of the modern sport of skateboarding. Though skateboarding in the park is banned today, skaters still make pilgrimages to the park to see where their idols honed their skills and pulled their most famous tricks. Now, the activities of choice in Love Park are splashing about in the fountain, and soaking up the energetic vibe of the international crowd. As of 2015, the city is planning to give the park a large scale renovation, which will add more green space, clean the park up—and keep the famous sculpture.

Half Day Highlights Tour in a Private Vehicle

Half Day Highlights Tour in a Private Vehicle

Your guide will take you on a poignant journey around the historic sites of the American Revolution where the seeds of independence were taking root long before a musket shot was fired. As you walk around Benjamin Franklin and Betsy Ross’s homes, along with the homes of numerous other founders, your guide will colour in the missing details of life in Philadelphia during the period: about the political climate of the time, about the tension and excitement around the city. Continue onto JFK Plaza where you can see one of the city’s most ‘instagrammable’ and recognisable sculptures: the LOVE statue. Then drive up the wide lanes of Benjamin Franklin Parkway, a street whose numerous sites could fill up a day on its own. See Rodin’s ‘The Thinker’ and numerous other public sculptures outside the Rodin Museum, before descending the 72 steps to the top of the ‘Rocky Stairs’. From the summit, enjoy sweeping vistas across Eakins Oval, Philadelphia City Hall, and Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Philadelphia Architecture: Discover Every American Style on a GPS Audio Tour

Philadelphia Architecture: Discover Every American Style on a GPS Audio Tour

Join me on a self-guided GPS audio tour that’ll open your eyes to the full range of Philadelphia’s architecture, spanning every American style from the 1850s to the present. One of the richest periods artistically, it was also one of the wealthiest. Mark Twain called these years the “Gilded Age” because America’s economy boomed and vast fortunes were rapidly made. Gilded Age styles like Second Empire Baroque, High Victorian Gothic and Romanesque all compete for your attention on this tour. The styles they gave way to as we entered the 20th century are eye catching too, like Beaux Arts, Art Deco, and International Style. Then from the 1970s we enter the Postmodern era, where almost anything goes architecturally – and that’s where we still find ourselves today. Along the way, I’ll tell you plenty of interesting but not strictly architectural stories about Philadelphia and its buildings too.
