The Basics

The 1.5-mile (2.4-kilometer) round-trip Manoa Falls trail is well marked, and while visitors some go at it alone, a number of tour operators offer guided hikes. Parts of the path are paved or lined with gravel, but because of the heavy foot traffic and rainy weather, the trail can be very wet and muddy. As a result the relatively easy hike can be slippery; the last few minutes before the falls are the most challenging. The pool at the bottom of the falls is no longer open for swimming due to falling rocks.

Lalumha falls or Manoa falls hike & Kailua / Lanikai beach day
Katie was the best guide. She bonded with our 14 year old teenagers. The hike to the waterfall was beautiful and she loaned us her deck chairs for our stop at spectacular lanikai beach. All in all this trip was the highlight of our vacation to Hawaii.

Lalumha falls or Manoa falls hike & Kailua / Lanikai beach day
The falls were amazing. The hike was manageable and our tour guide made everything memorable. He took really good care of my family while doing up and down. He made sure we were doing ok. The shrimp tacos were delicious too. Thank you Shamus for an awesome experience.

Lalumha falls or Manoa falls hike & Kailua / Lanikai beach day
My tour was amazing! It was a private tour. We stopped at some pretty cool places before taking our hike to the water fall. My tour guide warned me about the mud before the hike to the water. We got lunch and enjoyed a nice beach after. Super awesome !!!!

Wonderful Hiking Tour

Lalumha falls or Manoa falls hike & Kailua / Lanikai beach day
I took the Lalumha falls or Manoa falls hike & Kailua / Lanikai beach day tour with Seamus as my guide. The group was nice and small - only me, Seamus, and a couple from CA. Seamus was a very knowledgeable guide - very approachable and fun to hang out with. He knew the trail very well and carefully guided us over the more slippery areas. One should definitely be prepared to get muddy and wet on this tour - I actually felt relieved that it was raining because there are lots of changes in the terrain and sunny/hot weather may have been too much. Seamus will say the trail is okay for children and elderly, but I don't believe it is. Might be a pain. I wanted to get a little rugged this trip, so it was perfect for me. The waterfall at the end was gorgeous - Seamus didn't rush us at all. We were unable to do the beach due to the weather, but Seamus took us around the island and showed us turtle beach, which was lovely because we got to see multiple sea turtles! We stopped at a local woodworker's shop for gifts which was a nice touch - always prefer the mom and pop places to the cheap junk you get in touristy shops. Pickup and drop-off were seamless. Easily one of my highlights this trip and have already recommended to a friend who will be in the area soon. Thanks Seamus!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Plan on getting dirty, and wear sturdy walking shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy.

  • Bring insect repellent, as mosquitos are out in full force on the trail.

  • There is a small snack shop near the trail entrance.

  • The force of the waterfall depends on rainfall; expect less water in summer months.

When to Get There

The Manoa Falls trail is open year-round. Oahu has a mild, tropical climate, with hotter days in summer and a rainy season typically from November to March. On rainy days the waterfall is at its most impressive and the trail is less crowded—yet also very muddy.
