From the beginning of advent through Christmas Eve, Nuremberg blossoms with visitors from Germany and all over the world who come to see the famous Nuremberg Christmas Market. Here are a few ideas to make the most of your holiday visit to Nuremberg.
Go Christmas shopping.
Lined with chalet-style wooden stalls, the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt (Christmas market) is a great spot for holiday shopping. Gift ideas include wooden toys, delicate handmade jewelry, sparkling Christmas decorations, flavored vodkas, and a Nuremberg gold-foiled Christmas angel for your own tree. Next to the Nuremberg Christmas Market in the Old Town is the Sister Cities Market, where you can find crafts from more than a dozen of Nuremberg’s sister cities around the world.
Try German Christmas treats.
Food and drink stalls at the Christkindlesmarkt offer delicious Christmas favorites such as roasted almonds, Nuremberg sausages, and spicy gingerbread known as lebkuchen. Wash it all down with some gluhwein (hot mulled wine) or rum punch.
Enjoy the music.
Seasonal carol concerts take place daily in front of the Frauenkirche, while Nuremberg’s other churches are also regularly filled with the holiday music of carol services.
Meet the Christkind.
Opening the Christkindlemarkt from the balcony of the Church of Our Lady is the Christkind, a young woman decked out in curly blond hair, a white dress, and golden crown. Chosen every two years, the Christkind makes afternoon appearances throughout the Christkindlesmarkt Tuesday through Friday.
