Black River

Negril, Jamaica

The Basics

Adventure travelers visit the Black River and its natural swamp environment, which boasts the greatest biodiversity in the Caribbean, by tube, canoe, or kayak. Upriver at the YS Falls, one of the largest and prettiest waterfalls in Jamaica, water rushes over three levels of rocks landing in pools perfect for a refreshing dip.

A range of operators is available at the mouth of the river to set up a river tour or a crocodile safari to spot one of the hundreds of these large creatures who inhabit the mangroves.

YS Falls plus Black River Safari from Negril
We took this tour on February 13, 2020. The tour guide, Junior, was a very nice guy and accommodated all we asked. The Falls were beautiful and the guys there took incredible time in taking pictures on our own cameras. The Black River was fun with Captain C who had a very personal relationship with the crocs. Very fun day. Would highly recommend it.
Awesome day!

YS FALLS is a beauty. Pics dontbdo it justice. Our driver Julian gave us great Jamaica facts and tid bits. The only negative was the price was a little steep since entry fees were not covered

Our driver with SNL Jamaican Tours was Ricardo. He was awesome!! We were very impressed with his driving skills and his knowledge of Jamaica. We loved hearing him speak of the country and the Jamaican people. Our guide at the Falls was Kimarley and he was awesome helping us over the rocks. He held our phones and took pics and videos of us, FOR FREE! He was the best guide! We played on the Tarzan Rope and the gliding rope. He took a lot of good pics! It was very safe and lots of fun! The Falls were beautiful!!! The lunch at the restaurant was a buffet of Jamaican chicken, beef stew, rice with beans, and a roll with yummy punch. It was delicious! They also sell sodas including “Ginger Beer” which is a delicious soda! Try it!!! The Safari was very informative and our guide was Shane, I believe. He showed us some huge crocs, lots of birds, and told us about the ecosystem of the mangroves. I would do both tours again! I would book with SNL Jamaican Tours Company for any future tours! Thanks to everyone for the fun day!!!

YS Falls plus Black River Safari from Negril
Our tour guide was amazing! Took a beautiful ride to YS Falls, which looks like its right out of a storybook it’s so beautiful. The bonus is that most tourists go to Dunn’s Falls, so we had the place largely to ourselves. The guides there helped us through the waterfalls, then a dip in the pools, and we were off to an amazing lunch by the Black River. Then a boat ride on the Black River, and while on the boat, our very knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide told us all about the natural history of the area while identifying birds and naming crocodiles. It was an absolutely amazing and unforgettable day. If you take one tour, take this one! The scenery, the nature, and the people made this one of the best tours ever!!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Black River is suitable for solo travelers, couples, families with children, and nature lovers of all kinds.

  • Most boats can only travel a few miles upstream due to a low bridge obstructing the way, but some boats are able to pass under the bridge for deeper exploration. Ask your captain before you set off.

  • The river gets its name from its dark peat riverbed; the water is clear and clean and only appears black.

  • Remember sun protection and swimwear.

The Historical Town of Black River

Don’t miss the seaport town of Black River, one of the island’s oldest. Declared a Protected National Heritage District, the town has lavish wooden and stone houses of Victorian, Georgian, British colonial, and Jamaican vernacular architectural styles that flourished during the island’s lucrative logwood trade and rum and pimento booms. The Invercauld Great House, now a hotel, is just one of the fantastic buildings on High Street.
