Herculaneum walking tour

Herculaneum walking tour

A journey back in time in the luxurious Herculaneum, the pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea, destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The city was, unlike Pompeii with a commercial vocation, a real resort of the Roman aristocracy that lived along the coast of Campania. Unlike Pompeii, Herculaneum was covered by liquid pyroclastic material, which, solidifying, covered the city under a layer of 20 and more meters of volcanic rock. The high temperatures of the burning clouds that hit the city charred organic materials, which is why the remains of the wooden beams of the buildings, the stairs, the furniture, the ropes, found in the city since the first excavations of 1738 are still visible . Today only a small area of the city can be visited, while 80% of its surface still lies under the volcanic rock. But what can be visited gives us a clear indication of the high social level of its population.
