Kanheri Caves

Sanjay Gandhi National Park,Borivli East, Mumbai, India

The Basics

The Kanheri Caves are accessible by steep stone steps. The first cave visitors reach is Great Chaitya, featuring a large meditation hall full of intricate stone carvings and pillars. The two caves on both sides of Chaitya contain small stupas and more beautifully preserved carvings. The caves can be visited on a dedicated half-day excursion or as part of a larger tour of Mumbai-area attractions.

Full Day South Mumbai Private City Tour with Kanheri Caves
With a pick up at our hotel our private tour started on time. We first went to see the Kanheri caves and then to south Mumbai. Vikrant was a great guide, provided lots of information and always asked what we wanted to do. He's also a good photographer and took many pics of the 2 of us or selfies which make a great memory. Thanks for an interesting and very personal day in Mumbai!

Private Guided Tour of Kanheri Caves with Global Vipassana Pagoda
We did the tour as the cruise ship altered its itinerary and we had more time to spare in Mumbai and I’m so glad we did. We had a wonderful day away from the tourists and with an informative and friendly guide and a superb driver who safely managed the Mumbai traffic. Highly recommended if you have the time .

Full Day South Mumbai Private City Tour with Kanheri Caves
We were very satisfied with this tour and our guide Samir. He was not a typical guide (in a good sense) and spent more time with us than was stated in the itinerary. Thank you Samir for a nice day in your home town!

Private Kanheri- Buddhist Cave Tour
My tour guide Dev was very friendly and the driver for the tour was the best driver I had during my stay in Mumbai- both efficient and safe. Although the tour guide wasn't able to spout hundreds of facts about the caves, he knew a good deal of information, enough to answer my questions. The true joy of the tour was just getting out of the hustle of Mumbai and walking around the national park to marvel at the caves. After completing the tour, I still think it was overpriced, but it was the only real option I saw when I was looking last minute.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • A must-visit for history buffs and art lovers.

  • The caves are only accessible via stone-cut stairs, so wear solid footwear and be prepared to walk.

  • Bottled water is available for purchase near the site, but sunscreen and insect repellant are not.

When to Get There

The Kanheri Caves are open Tuesday through Sunday from 7:30am to 6pm, though the last entry is at 4pm. Travelers are welcome year-round, but the caves are best visited in the cooler, drier months (October to March). However, if travelers are in the area during the sweltering months of May and June, the caves do provide relief from the heat.

Brahmi India’s Ancient Script

Many of the inscriptions on the cave walls are in the Brahmi script, which was likely at its peak at some point in the fourth and fifth centuries BC. Many of the myriad scripts used in India today descended from Brahmi, including Devanagari, which is used for writing Hindi and Sanskrit.
