Carretera Mexico Teotihuacan KM 46, San Juan Teotihuacán, Central Mexico

The Basics

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is commonly visited on day trips from nearby Mexico City. See the pyramids from above on a sunrise hot-air balloon ride before exploring the ruins on the ground, or opt for an early-morning tour with an archaeologist to learn the site's history and avoid the crowds that descend later in the day. Teotihuacán highlights include the Moon Plaza, the Sun Pyramid, the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl, and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl (the feathered serpent).

Teotihuacan, Tlatelolco, Guadalupe Shrine and Tequila Tasting Tour
Our guide Gerson was amazing. He was very interactive and made the whole experience so much fun. The Teotihuacan tour was great too! The highlight of the day was definitely the tequila tasting. It was amazing to try out new things we would not have known about otherwise. The whole day was fantastic and I hundred percent would recommend it.

Teotihuacan + Basilica + Tlatelolco
Our guide Arturo was truly incredible. He was patient, kind and gave us such a cultural experience. We learned so much about the history or this beautiful land. Teotihuacan and the Basilicas were each very different experiences but both moved my heart. The Tlatelolco was quite an education. We had an amazing lunch on the rooftop overlooking the Pyramids. I highly recommend.

Teotihuacan: City of the Gods. The best Private Tour
Excelent driver and guide! The knowledge of Miguel was fantastic and the now how and safe driver was important. Everything was more then we expected. Even changes in our plans were imediata made as we wished. The pontuality of all the tour was noticed. One more thing: extremely COVID safe Thanks

Hot Air Balloon Flight over Teotihuacan, from Mexico City
The trip itself was great but the company Volare was unorganized and did not follow any Covid protections. The vans were fully loaded, masks were not required, and outside an initial temperature check and hand sanitizer there were zero precautions.

Our guide Daniel and Marco were very knowledgeable and explained the history of the sun and moon pyramids + way of life of Teotihuacan and Aztecs in good detail. ATV was definitely a fun way to explore the area.

Private Day Tour to Teotihuacan from Mexico City
Sal was fun, charismatic, and a great driver/guide! We had so much fun seeing the ruins and learning about the history, and the trip to the basilica (with some good food in between) was beautiful. We went during the trailing end (for the US at least) of COVID, so there were still partial closures, but that didn’t stop us or Sal from having a great time. Thanks again, Sal!

Small-Group Teotihuacan Pyramids from Mexico City
Javier is very personable and knowledgeable. We spent a pleasant morning at the pyramids and felt that our time was well spent. Because of COVID, we were not allowed to climb any of the pyramids, but we had done so on a previous visit. We learned a bit more of the history and culture on our tour with Javier.

Teotihuacán Full Day Tour from Mexico City
Wow! Julio Caesar made the history of the pyramids and the entire area demonstrated in depth knowledge and personal connection to the sights. He and our driver, Angelina, made an excellent pair. The only complaints I have are that some parts of the sights we visited we closed due to COVID and the artisans we visited made us feel pressured to purchase items that seemed high priced.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Teotihuacán is a must-see for history buffs and those interested in indigenous cultures.

  • The steep climb to the top of the Sun Pyramid includes more than 200 steps so requires a reasonable level of fitness.

  • Though the pyramids are not wheelchair accessible, the site itself and the restrooms are.

  • The site is closed on Mondays, and Mexican residents receive free admission on Sundays.

  • On weekends and holidays, a trolley takes visitors from the entry booths to various stops within the site for a small fee.

How to Get There

Located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northeast of Mexico City, Teotihuacán is accessible by the scenic but long 132D, a winding freeway that can take well over an hour, and 85D, a toll road that will usually get you to the pyramids in about 50 minutes. It's also easy and convenient to take a bus from the Terminal Central del Norte in Mexico City; buses leave at least hourly and are geared toward tourists with limited Spanish skills.

When to Get There

Since locals receive free admission on Sundays, expect more crowds then. Popular Mexican public holidays, such as Independence Day (September 16), the week of Easter, and All Saints Day (November 1) also tend to attract more visitors. In general, in order to beat the crowds, arrive in the early morning either on a private tour or on your own.

Visiting the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe

About a 50-minute drive from Teotihuacán, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Basílica de Santa María de Guadalupe) is the most-visited religious site in Latin America. In 1531, a man professed to see a vision of the Virgin Mary at the site, and a second image is said to have appeared on his cloak. Millions of worshippers come to the basilica every year to see this sacred cloth, and Our Lady of Guadalupe Day is celebrated December 12.
