Molokini Crater

Molokini Island Preserve, Makena Bay, 96753

The Basics

Travelers can spend time swimming, snorkeling, and diving at the crescent-shaped caldera, where ocean depths range from 10 to 60 feet. All trips include snorkel gear as well as a scenic boat ride, and the chance to splash in the clear blue water at one of Maui's best snorkel sites. Sail and snorkel adventures generally last about five hours and offer roundtrip transportation from hotels in Lahaina and Makena. Some Molokini snorkeling tours also offer scuba diving for certified divers.

A GREAT TIME!!!
This company was a little more $$$ than the other ones but they had openings and at the end of the day it was money well spent and one of the highlights of my time in Maui! Staff was knowledgeable, fun, and friendly! Food was good, snorkeling spots were AMAZING!!! The one thing I found out is becasue this boat is smaller it was able to go to the "back wall" of the crater, most big ships do not do this. At the end of the day it was worth it and the memories are priceless!!!

Molokini Crater plus Turtle Town Snorkeling 4-hour Tour
Was a fantastic experience. The "Getaway" Crew was awesome. Captain and crew are very professional. They gave a lot of information about the places and animals. I saw a lot of turtles and made some good shots with the cam at Turtle Town / Condos. Molokini Crater was great too. Lot of colorful fish. Was a wonderful morning. This trip is highly recommended.

Molokini Crater Zodiak Adventure Snorkel and Turtle Cove Swim
Small boat with only 16 passengers have a more intimate experience. The captain was knowledgeable and very friendly. While there are many spots around the island that are good for snorkeling, Molokini crater was definitely the best for the variety of fish.

Maui Snorkeling Molokini Crater and Turtle Town
Our first snorkeling excursion was canceled, and that’s why we booked here. We were SO glad we did. The crew was busy working the entire time to make things go smoothly for us. It was well planned and exactly as advertised. Everything was clean, food was great, crew was helpful and friendly. Snorkeling was a great experience. We saw many fish and a couple of sea turtles.

Molokini Crater plus Turtle Town Snorkeling 4-hour Tour
Ultra professional crew with over 50+ years experience in diving and boat operations - safety is the highest priority! This is a rare small boat experience with true professionals who are focused on making this a once in a lifetime experience and they did. I appreciated the fact they gave the ocean and sea life the highest priority and went to great lengths to share the history, flora and fauna! Absolutely thrilled we chose Spencer and the crew!

Alex and Esteban were awesome. They were friendly, knowledgeable and really made it a fun experience. It was great to have a small group instead of a large boat with hundreds of people. I highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting the area!

This experience was amazing. Our crew Zach and Tim were the perfect crew. They were educated about the islands and also kept everyone laughing the whole trip. Absolute amazing snorkel experience on both sides of Molokini crater. Also got to swim with sea turtles!! 10/10 recommend this company if you’re going to snorkel Molokini. The most memorable part of our first Maui trip!!

Molokini Crater Zodiak Adventure Snorkel and Turtle Cove Swim
Brad & Ryan took great care of us ensuring we had a great time. Snorkeling around the crater was amazing! Unfortunately we didn’t see any turtles but we did hear the whales under the water! Lunch hit the spot! It was perfect going on a smaller boat. Less people jumping in all at once and a more personal experience.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Beat the crowds with an early Molokini tour.

  • Be sure to bring sunscreen and a swimsuit.

  • Snuba diving (a kind of snorkeling-scuba diving hybrid) is available as an upgrade on many Molokini snorkeling tours.

  • Private charters are available for personalized experiences.

How To Get There

Set off Maui's southern coastline, Molokini Crater is only accessible by boat, powerboat, or raft. Popular departure points include Maalaea Harbor and Kihei Boat Ramp. The Molokini snorkel tours that leave from Maalaea Harbor are on large, stable boats, whereas tours that leave from Kihei Boat Ramp are on small rafts that are faster and bumpier, shortening the overall travel distance.

When To Get There

Mornings offer the calmest conditions at this tropical caldera, and the earlier you get there the better. Tradewinds can be strong in summer, making for a thrilling ride back. Winter tends to have lighter winds, plus the added bonus of potentially spotting humpback whales.

Why Molokini Crater is Hawaii's Best Snorkeling Spot

Because Molokini is three miles offshore of Maui, you never know what you're going to find. Eagle rays, dolphins, and harmless reef sharks will frequently mingle with resident critters like parrotfish and octopus. In winter if you dive a few feet below water, or go on a scuba or snuba dive, the haunting song of humpback whales reverberates in the distance. Note that Hawaiian green sea turtles are rarely spotted at Molokini Crater, which is why many boats include a second snorkeling trip at "Turtle Town" off of Maui's southern coast.
