Dalyan River

Dalyan, Turkey

The Basics

Dalyan River cruises set out from Dalyan Village toward Iztuzu Beach at the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea. Stop along the way to soak in the mineral-rich Dalyan mud baths and admire the Lycian ruins of Kaunos—particularly the tombs of the kings, carved into cliffsides high above the river.

Some tours also head north of Dalyan to explore the beaches of Lake Köyceğiz, where you can take a swim, watch birds around the wetlands, or relax in the Sultaniye Hot Springs.

Brilliant trip - great value for money
Brilliant day trip from start to finish. Mud baths were great. Lunch on boat was fresh and tasty. Tombs were beautiful and turtle beach was great fun! Our hosts on the boat were lovely and drinks were very good value as were photos to remind us of our day. Would thoroughly recommend this trip to anyone.

Dalyan River Cruise, Turtle Beach & Mud Baths from Marmaris
The trip was very nice, the guide was well informed, the beach was super. I wish though they mention there was an hour bus ride and 2 hours of boat before we get to the beach . So if you are travelling with kids be prepared...

Dalyan River Cruise, Turtle Beach & Mud Baths from Marmaris
A fabulous family trip with teenagers. The owner made everyone feel welcome and made the experience very enjoyable with his happy personality. The mud baths were great fun and we were given a lovely lunch of chicken, pasta and salad after we had the chance to bathe and clean the mud off. The boat trip through the Dalyan winding river was lovely seeing the tombs of rhe Kings and spotting turtles hiding in the reeds, it brought great excitement. Turtle beach was absolutely beautiful and the sea was adult shoulder depth quite far out which made it safe for novice swimmers. The return journey brought the option of an additional meal (extra charge at a reasonable price) which we were offered fresh water crab and fish, both were delicious. All together it was a brilliant day trip with a fabulous host. We all really enjoyed every minute of the adventure. I would highly recommend.

Dalyan Day Trip from Bodrum to Dalyan River Cruise, Iztuzu Beach with Mud Baths
The actual experience was lovely- the mud baths were fun, the lunch was OK and the boat and scenery were stunning. The transfer time from Bodrum was nearly 4 hours though!!! We were told it would be around 90 mins. My children get very travel sick and 8 hrs of travelling in 1 day is too much in 33° heat. We also felt that, the unexpected extra stop offs for crab "to attract the turtles" (despite only receiving the crab after we'd left turtle beach where we saw no turtles) and the stop off at a wine cellar (not child friendly after a long day) were simply ways to get us to spend more money. Having said all that, the trip was very special and I would recommend to anyone staying nearer to Dalyan.

Dalyan River Cruise, Turtle Beach & Mud Baths from Marmaris
The cruise itself was good, the guide was very hospitable. The first stop which was the mud bath was nice views but the mud bath itself wasn't got me. It looked a bit more like a dirty pool, lunch was decent, the stop at dalyan beach was amazing and the water was warm, it was a shame didn't get to see any turtles but overall it was good value for money

Dalyan River Cruise, Turtle Beach & Mud Baths from Marmaris
Tour from start to finish was well organised and well managed. Enjoyable boat trip on a small boat with other English speaking guests. Tour guide very knowledgeable about the area. Boat captain was delightful and had many skills from driving the boat to serving drinks and cooking tasty meals for us. Thoroughly recommend booking this tour.

Dalyan River Cruise, Turtle Beach & Mud Baths from Marmaris
This was a most enjoyable relaxing trip with plenty to see. The Lake and river cruise was most enjoyable with Dalyan tombs the highlight. Turtle beach was beautiful although turtle sightings are rare.

How to Get There

The Dalyan River is best experienced by boat from the village of Dalyan. Most day-trippers get to Dalyan from Fethiye to the south (about an hour’s drive away) or Marmaris to the north (about a 1.5-hour drive). Buses run from both cities, but joining a tour is often the most convenient option, as round-trip transport and a boat cruise are typically included.

When to Get There

Summer is the most popular time to visit, when attractions such as Iztuzu Beach and the Dalyan mud baths can get crowded. If you’re staying in Dalyan, an early morning or late afternoon cruise means you’ll avoid the tour groups. Turtles make their nests on Iztuzu Beach from May to August; July and August are when you can usually see the baby turtles making their way out to sea.

Iztuzu Beach

The sand spit marking the meeting point of the Dalyan River and the Mediterranean, Iztuzu Beach (aka Turtle Beach) is named for the many endangered loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) that inhabit its shores. In summer, hundreds of turtles lay their eggs on the beach, making it one of the most important breeding grounds in the Mediterranean. Besides turtle-watching, sunbathe, swim in the ocean, or visit the turtle conservation center.
