Valley of the Kings, Luxor

The Basics

The tombs in the Valley of the Kings offer a variety of experiences, and only a small number of the tombs are open on any given day. King Tut’s tomb is filled with bright, colorful wall paintings and also contains his linen-wrapped mummy in a glass display case, although many treasures from the tomb have been removed and are now displayed in the Egyptian Museum.

Tickets to the Valley of the Kings include entry to three tombs of your choice (depending on which are open to the public on the day). The Tomb of King Tutankhamun requires a separate ticket. Some tours combine a visit to the Valley of the Kings with a trip to the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut (at Deir el-Bahari), the Ramesseum (Mortuary Temple of Ramses II), the Valley of the Nobles, or other destinations in Luxor.

Breathtaking Temples and Tombs
Descend into the places where Pharaohs entered the afterlife. See the decorated walls in close-up splendor. Our guide was great, knew her stuff and presented it well. Nicely, she left us alone for a while to let us explore on our own.

Luxor: Egy Hot Air Balloon Ride /((sunrise flight)) over valley of the kings
This was such a fantastic experience. It was fun, safe, and gorgeous. You can’t ask for a better view of Luxor than this. We saw the Nile at sunrise and the valley of the kings. We flew with small children (ages 6 and 7) who also loved it! 10/10 would do this again!!

Luxor: Egy Hot Air Balloon Ride /((sunrise flight)) over valley of the kings
This hot air balloon ride is an absolute must! The tour began by crossing the Nile on a motor boat while sipping coffee & tea. The balloon ride itself was amazing! Our balloon driver/captain was professional & informative. He got our balloon up first (of all the balloons), took us farther and higher than all others, and made a very smooth landing. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience that the whole family enjoyed!

The tour was very well organised and we had a great day. Everything worked out as we expected. The ride in the hot air balloon was amazing and breathtaking with incredible views. Our tour guide Hatem for the valley of the kings was the best guide we could imagine. We could have listened to him for hours as he explained everything and gave us interesting facts about the temples. We enjoyed every second of this day.

West Bank in a nutshell - good choice!

Luxor West bank Tour Valley of The Kings, Hatshepsut Temple & Colossi of Memnon
I went on this trip with driver Islam and guide Hator, and they were both very professional. This trip was perfect, because due to the heat a long tour would be too exhausting, and this half-day experience let me see the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon without getting too much tired. You must be aware of the fact that there is a compulsory stop at a local community shop where you will probably be talked into buying something by a very skillful guy, but to be honest I'm happy with the alabaster figurines I bought there, even though I probably overpaid (there will be bargaining down from an insane initial price). But I believe the quality is good, so this might be a good place for your souvenir shopping. All in all, I can recommend this trip, it's well-paced, not overwhelming, gives you a good and solid taste of the West Bank of Luxor 😊

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Valley of the Kings is a must-visit spot for travelers interested in ancient Egyptian history and archaeology.

  • The site is very sunny, so bring plenty of sun protection and wear protective clothing.

  • You must purchase passes to take pictures inside the tombs.

  • The site’s rough ground and steep stairs make the site unsuitable for visitors in wheelchairs or pushing strollers.

Visiting the Valley of the Nobles

While many of Egypt’s pharaohs were interred at the Valley of the Kings, the elites were laid to rest in the nearby Valley of the Nobles. Visit these tombs to see vivid wall paintings depicting daily life in ancient Egypt, including images of grand feasts, colorful animals, and artisans at work. Due to its proximity to the Valley of the Kings, the two valleys are often seen together, along with the nearby Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir el-Bahari).
