Museum of Musical Instruments (Museo de Instrumentos Musicales) Tours

Museum of Musical Instruments (Museo de Instrumentos Musicales)
The privately owned Museum of Musical Instruments (Museo de Instrumentos Musicales) houses the most extensive collection of its kind in Bolivia. You’ll see native Bolivian volcanic rock flutes; thousands of percussion, string, and wind instruments; and much more.

The Basics
Highlights include a guitar made from armadillos, a panpipe made from palm leaves (which can only be played standing up), and charangos (Andean guitars) constructed from turtle shell and goat heels. Explore the museum at your own pace, trying out instruments in the interactive section. Or, join a La Paz sightseeing tour that stops by the museum along with other landmarks, such as the Witches Market and the 16th-century San Francisco Church.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • The Museum of Musical Instruments is a must for music lovers and culture buffs.
  • The first floor of the museum is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers; however, there’s no elevator to the second floor.
  • Most visitors spend about an hour at the museum.

How to Get There
The Museum of Musical Instruments is located on Jaen Street (Calle Jaén), one of the brightest and best-preserved historical streets in La Paz. From Central Station, the museum is about a 20-minute walk via Avenida Ismael Montes.

When to Get There

The museum is open daily from 9:30am to 6:30pm, but closes for lunch between 1:30pm and 2:30pm.
