Kamakura Zen Art, Zen Philosophy, and Zazen Experience at Zen Temple

Kamakura Zen Art, Zen Philosophy, and Zazen Experience at Zen Temple

In this course, you can experience Zen at an ancient Zen temple. You will be able to see Zen art, learn about Zen story paintings, and experience Zen meditation. This three-hour course is a beginner-friendly course that will teach you the Zen way of thinking in an accessible manner. Kamakura is the birthplace of Zen in Japan and is a popular tourist destination for foreigners. The venue is the Zen temple "Kigen-in," which usually prohibits tourists from entering. Before and after the zazen experience, we will draw the circular Zen symbol "Enso," which is a kind of Zen art. After this, we will perform Zen meditation (3 times) and listen to a commentary on the paintings of Zen and learn the philosophy of Zen by combining what you have learned and your Zen experience. When you draw an Enso for the second time, you will draw on our handmade paper, certified by UNESCO. You can experience the transformative power of Zen by comparing the two Enso.

[Kanagawa] Kita-Kamakura Yoyoaki Museum of Art

[Kanagawa] Kita-Kamakura Yoyoaki Museum of Art

"Yoyoaki Museum of Art" is a museum that opened in 1991 in Kita-Kamakura. The building has a calm appearance, similar to a Western-style building that appears in picture books. Inside the museum are works by Yoshiaki Ha, who has a track record in the "Bologna International Children's Book Exhibition Graphic Award". Valuable initial works and original paintings such as watercolors and oil paintings are on display. At the museum shop next to it, you can find goods that can only be purchased here. Many works that inspire your imagination are exhibited in the hall, and you will gradually be drawn into the world view. You can think about the feeling of the hero drawn on the big page in the picture book and feel a little adventure. Please spend a relaxing time surrounded by a quiet forest.

Samurai Photo Tours: A Fun Day Out Discovering Kamakura

Samurai Photo Tours: A Fun Day Out Discovering Kamakura

star-5
Hi, I’m Peter. I was born in England, but I’ve lived most of life in Japan. I would be delighted to show you around Kamakura, where I presently live, and share with you my knowledge and love of its fascinating history. Kamakura served as Japan’s de facto capital from 1185 – 1333. It's where the first shogun, Minamoto no Yoritomo, was born. The Kamakura Period is also the birthplace of Zen Buddhism and the samurai culture. I'll explain the history as we visit different temples and shrines, some of them dating back hundreds of years. In the course of our tour, I'll also talk about aspects of Japanese life, and can arrange a delicious lunch at a restaurant specialising in local cuisine. As a bonus, I’ll take souvenir photos of you – or help you take quality pictures of your own. The tour lasts 5 hours and you may select your starting time on the booking form. If you’re planning a trip to Japan, I strongly recommend you include Kamakura. There’s a lot to discover in this beautiful city!
