Cawdor Castle and Gardens Tours

Cawdor Castle and Gardens
Immortalized at the fictional home of the Thane of Cawdor in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Cawdor Castle is one of Scotland’s most famous castles. Despite its literary notoriety, Cawdor Castle and Gardens actually have little in common with their fictional counterpart. The castle wasn’t built until the 14th-century - years after both the real and fictional King Macbeth existed. Today, the castle is still home to the descendants of the Clan Campbell of Cawdor and the grade-A listed building remains remarkably preserved, surrounded by immaculate gardens, the Cawdor Big Wood and a 9-hole golf course. Highlights for visitors include the sumptuous Drawing Room, with its fascinating family portraits; the Dining Room, with its grand stone fireplace; the 17th-century-style Tapestry Bedroom; and the Old Kitchen, as well as the fabled Thorn Tree around which the historic castle was built.

Cawdor Castle, Clava cairns and Culloden Battlefield

Cawdor Castle, Clava cairns and Culloden Battlefield

We will start of with a visit to a beautiful Castle, Cawdor Castle which is linked to Shakespeare's Macbeth, but home to the magical, fairy tale castle. It dates from the late 14th century, having been built as a private fortress by the Thanes of Cawdor, with the ancient medieval tower built around the legendary holly tree - wherever you look, Cawdor Castle is steeped in intrigue and history. A short drive from here will take us to the famous site of the last battle fought on British soil, Culloden Battlefield for visit and lunch. Culloden Battlefield has been restored as close as possible to how it was when battle took place in April 1746. There is a fantastic state of the art visitors centre, where we have time to take in over 250yrs of history and artifacts since the Battle. After lunch, a 5 minute drive to the Clava cairns. This is a fascinating historical place dating back to 2000BC. A Clava Cairn is a type of circular chamber tomb cairn from the Bronze Age.

Historic battlesites, a ruined castle, a 4,000 year old burial ground, beautiful countryside and whisky! This private customisable tour has it all! First is Culloden Battlefield, the site of the last pitched battle on mainland Britain in 1746. Wander the historic site towards the memorial cairn and see markers of where the doomed clans lined up to fight against the Government forces. Next is Clava Cairns said to be one of the sites that inspired the Outlander books. It’s a Bronze Age cemetery complex of passage graves, cairns, and standing stones. Passing Clava Viaduct we'll reach Cawdor Castle (Macbeth anyone?) to explore the castle and the beautiful grounds. After driving down Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle ruins, you can use the remaining ramparts to scour Loch Ness for monsters! Then its Beauly to a 13th century priory and to wander around this pretty Highland town. Finally, we’ll head north and its whisky time! We’ll visit a distillery to sample some of the water of life!
