Market Square Park Tours
1 Review

Set in the heart of downtown Houston at the site of the city’s original founding, Market Square Park is the greenest, hippest, and most historic square block in town. The urban park is popular with picnickers, cyclists, and anyone looking for quiet reflection in the middle of the bustling city.
The Basics
Anchored by a clock tower that dates back to 1904, when it adorned City Hall, Market Square Park is rich in local history and ambiance. Colorful public art is scattered throughout the park’s ample green space, and a dog run draws pet owners and their four-legged friends. Community bike rides and other outdoor events often fill the park with a lively buzz. Many walking tours of downtown Houston, including cocktail tours, haunted city tours, underground tunnel tours, and self-guided audio tours, feature a stop at Market Square Park.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Don’t forget to bring your camera; the park’s public art collection makes for excellent photo ops.
- Visitors are welcome to bring blankets, lawn chairs, food, and non-alcoholic beverages to the park.
- The park is well shaded and has plenty of benches for seating.
- How to Get There
- Market Square Park is located in downtown Houston, within easy walking distance of many attractions and public parking garages. Parking during weekday business hours can be a challenge, so it’s a good idea to take public transit, a taxi, or a rideshare.
When to Get There
The park is open daily from dawn to dusk, and there’s no admission charge to visit. Go around mealtime to grab a bite at one of the many surrounding restaurants.
Lauren’s Garden
While taking a stroll through Market Square Park, be sure to stop at Lauren’s Garden. This memorial—a stone fountain with seasonal flower displays—is dedicated to the memory of the lives lost on September 11, 2001. The garden is named for Houston native Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas, a passenger on flight United 93, and is a peaceful yet somber piece of more recent history that accompanies the park’s centuries-old Texas heritage.
