Gumbo Limbo Trail
The basics
The short walk under the shade of various verdant limbs, including royal palms, strangler figs, ferns, and gumbo limbo trees (noted for its red, peeling bark), should only take about an hour. But that is ample time to take in your subtropical surroundings. Learn about this important Everglades ecosystem, including the history and use of the Gumbo Limbo tree over the centuries, by picking up an informational brochure at the Royal Palm Visitor Center located at the start of the trailhead.
Things to know before you go
- The Gumbo Limbo Trail is wheelchair-accessible, but bicycles are prohibited.

When to get there
The trail is open year-round and the visitor center is usually open daily, but it’s advisable to check opening times before visiting. Peak season is typically during the park’s dry season (November through April) due to mild temperatures, low humidity, clear skies, and fewer mosquitoes.
Royal Palm State Park
Considered to be the nucleus of the Everglades, Royal Palm State Park is 4,000 acres of biodiverse ecosystems and habitats, and is a great option for those visiting within a limited time frame. You can access the two most popular trails—Anhinga and Gumbo Limbo—from the visitor center.
