Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship
The Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship is a working replica of the 19th-century vessel that carried Irish emigrants to North America on 16 journeys undertaken between 1847 and 1855. Today, the vessel and museum offers tours of the re-created ship revealing what the transatlantic passage was like for those fleeing the devastation of the Great Irish Famine.

The Basics
The Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship can be visited only as part of a guided tour. Visitors learn about the original vessel and the construction of the replica ship, and guides take participants below deck to show the cramped living conditions endured by the ship’s passengers. Some Dublin sightseeing passes also include a tour of the Jeanie Johnston.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship is a must for travelers with an interest in Irish history.
  • Book a tour in advance to secure a spot at your preferred time.
  • The ship is not wheelchair accessible.

How to Get There
The Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship is docked at Custom House Quay on the north bank of the River Liffey. Ride the Luas Red Line tram to George’s Dock. The ship is less than five minutes’ walk from the station.

Tours take place six times daily between April and October, and four times daily between November and March. During the peak summer months of July and August, book in advance to reserve your spot.

Delve into the History of the Great Famine
Upon exiting the Jeanie Johnston, walk west along the riverfront for a few minutes and you’ll reach the Famine Memorial, a series of bronze sculptures that represent the starving Irish citizens forced to emigrate during the Great Famine. Next to the Jeanie Johnston is EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, which traces the stories of the 10 million Irish people to have left Ireland for foreign shores, including more than a million who fled the famine.

I was expecting a lot more to be honest. Some actual artifacts, more general knowledge information instead of individuals. Too much talking, was expecting to walk around to read information slides ourselves. People can read that information online.

This was by far our favorite activity in Dublin. Our guide was knowledgable and we loved listening to the history of the ship, the history of Ireland and looking at all of the beautiful vignettes they have created with mannequins truly placed you back in history.

Dublin Private 1916 Rebellion & Prison Tour with a LocalHalf-day Tours

Dublin Private 1916 Rebellion & Prison Tour with a Local

star-5
The 1916 Rebellion is a crucial moment in Irish History and the event is still very much a part of Dublin today. Step into the past with a local and visit the spots where rebels fought for the freedom of their country. Plus hear about the events that brought Ireland to the point of rebellion. Start your local experience hearing about the Great Irish Famine. From the memorial to the ships that transported Irish people to America, this sad event is still remembered all over the city. Your local host will explain how the famine drove the Irish people to rebel on Easter Monday 1916. Swing by Arbour Hill Cemetary and Prison which is the burial site of 14 of the leaders of the rebellion. Then finish your historical experience in front of Kilmainham Gaol. Now a museum, this impressive building is a former prison and the spot where the rebels were imprisoned and executed.

Dublin City & Bay + Dublin pubs Bucket List & live Irish music private day tourDay Trips

Dublin City & Bay + Dublin pubs Bucket List & live Irish music private day tour

star-5
Can't decide between a Dublin city & bay private tour or Dublins world famous pubs & whiskey scene? Now you don't need to choose between the two! Enjoy an authentic Irish experience and exploration of Dublin city & bay followed by a selection of classic Dublin pubs, only the very best. Phenomenal Guinness, Irish craft beer, Irish whiskey and traditional Irish music. In addition to some of your classic Dublin sightseeing, I cover the heavyweight pieces of Irish history that still shape our character and the land itself today, namely 'an gorta mor' (the great hunger) and the 1916 Easter Rising and our Dublin pub culture that is unrivalled for its craic (fun). We will have plenty of fun along the way too! including some great Irish traditional music which tell stories of their very own. An executive taxi means we are permitted in bus lanes, so no sitting in traffic! Along the way, we'll stop for some 'soakage' aka good Irish food before you have beers ;) See you in Dublin. . Éamonn
