The Basics

One of Da Nang’s major landmarks, Son Tra Mountain and its monkeys feature on many tours, which usually combine a drive to the summit with a stop at Marble Mountains, home to limestone caves filled with shrines to Lord Buddha; the archeological complex of My Son Sanctuary; and Dragon Bridge, which breathes fire on Friday and Saturday nights. It's possible to reach the mountaintop on foot in a 4-hour trip by taking the hiking trail from Bai Bac Beach.

A stunning drive
A beautiful drive with an excellent driver, Dung. Had plenty of stops for photo ops and as much time as I needed at each sight.

Hue to Hoi An or Hoi An to Hue by car via Hai Van pass, monkey mountain, beaches
We couldn’t be happier with the experience John provided us. We traveled Hoi An to Hue. Marble Mtn is absolutely stunning. We were equally awed by Monkey Island. John’s English is very good and he shared lots of info with us. He knew all the places to stop for beautiful pics. Lunch was great. He even gave us recommendations of where to eat in Hue and they did not disappoint. Highly recommend!

Guided Tour to Visit Marble Mountain,Lady Buddha Statue& Monkey Mountain by Jeep
Our guide Ty was very kind and knowledgeable- he answered all my children's endless questions on buddhism. He was flexible so we got to see all we wanted. The second half of the trip to see the red-shanked douc (one of the rarest primates in the world) was wonderful. We did not expect to see but we ended up seeing so much as a large male douc leaped over our jeep to travel to his friend and head to their sleep site. The afternoon tour time worked beautifully. Coming down the mountain through the evening mist was magical. I can not recommend this tour enough - after living in Vietnam many years and being a primatologist - I rarely take guided tours - but this was with every penny. Thank you

Hue to Hoi An or Hoi An to Hue by car via Hai Van pass, monkey mountain, beaches
We had a very comfortable and interesting ride and tour from Huy to HoiAn. Our driver Dong was outstanding. He knew the politics, culture and history of Vietnam and was well versed in all of the sites we visited along the way. We stopped to take pictures along the way. Especially enjoyed Monkey Mountain stop. Unfortunately heavy rain detracted from fully enjoying Da Nang beaches and Marble Mountain.

Scooter Adventure on Monkey Mountain
My husband and I took this tour and loved it! He rode his own scooter and I rode with one of the guides, Thanh. Thanh was a great person to ride with, he was very nice, educational, and a very safe driver. Tam was a wonderful guide who took us up to Monkey Mountain. We felt very safe the whole time. We stopped for lots of great photo opportunities along the way. Tam was very clever and helped me get the best poses ( my favorite was a yoga pose) at the most scenic places. We got to see monkeys up close which was such a treat, they are so cute. We stopped at a nice picnic spot for lunch, which was delicious. We had homemade burgers made by Tam's mom, you get a choice of beef, chicken, or veggie along with cold drinks. The view at the top of the mountain was amazing. On our way back, we stopped for a sugar cane drink and some grilled rice paper snacks which was really nice. Overall, I suggest you book this tour, you won't regret it!

Me and my boyfriend had a great day travelling with Zdung from Hoi An to Hue. He was very informative / knowledgable and was happy to answer any additional questions we had. The car was very comfortable and perfect for a very rainy trip. We enjoyed each stop and liked the flexibility of timing and stops. Would recommend.

A Trip You Have To Take
barceparis, May 2019
Hue to Hoi An or Hoi An to Hue by car via Hai Van pass, monkey mountain, beaches
This is a great trip from Hue to Hoi An. You really get a sense of the beauty of the Vietnam landscape and Monkey Mountain was fun. Our driver, Tommy Bao was excellent. Most importantly he was a very good driver which is somewhat important on two lane curvy roads. He also was knowledgeable about the sights we were seeing. My only quibble was that I was told lunch was included and we ended up buying our own. Didn’t spoil the day!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The monkeys on Son Tra Mountain can be aggressive, particularly where food is involved; it's best not to touch the wild animals.

  • If you plan on hiking, bring sturdy shoes, insect repellant, and plenty of water.

  • Uneven surfaces and super-steep slopes mean that Son Tra Mountain (Monkey Mountain) is difficult to access if you’re using a wheelchair.

Exploring the Linh Ung Pagoda

As well as a large population of primates, Son Tra Mountain (Monkey Mountain) is home to one of Da Nang’s most recognizable landmarks—the statue of Lady Buddha, part of the Linh Ung Pagoda complex. The sacred site offers sweeping vistas of the peninsula and is home to temples, statues of mythical beasts, and elaborately-designed pagodas.
