Maras Salt Pools

Carreta a Maras, Maras

The Basics

A subterranean stream rises to the surface and drips into terraced pools; within days, the warm water evaporates, leaving behind a thin layer of salt. At the pans you’ll see locals harvesting this salt in a manner similar to ancient times—scraping the dry, salty crystals by hand from the sides and bottom of the pool. The scene is spectacular, with the patchwork of mines set into the mountain hillsides, especially on sunny days when the pools shine with brilliant shades of white and pink.

You can explore the salt pools as part of private or group day tours from Cusco, or on multi-day tours that may include Lima, Machu Picchu, and various towns in the Sacred Valley—all with their own worthy attractions. For a taste of adventure, explore the incredible scenery on a mountain bike or ATV.

A wild ride :)
For starters, Wilson was the best tour guide! He was super enthusiastic and made the adventure that much more memorable! We had such a wonderful time on this excursion and would do it again in a heartbeat. Even if you have never rode on an ATV, they help you every step of the way! **WORTH IT** and definitely see Moray and the salt mines , you won’t regret it!!!

ATV Tour to Moray, Maras and Salt Flat in the Sacred Valley from Cusco
IT was relatively inexpensive, and was a great fun going to Moray and Maras. The guide spoke very good english, the scenery was amazing, and the ATV worked flawlessly. Couple of points to watch out for is that if you reserve for two people, you will be sharing one ATV, and that may be not so obvious when you reserve it and I'm not sure what you need to do when you reserve it so that the each person has an ATV, we were able to negotiate a fair price so that we each had our own ATV, not a big deal. It was a little hard to get a hold of the tour operator to ask questions, details until the day before, I wish there was easier way to communicate the details, answer questions. Lastly, the transportation from the hotel to the ATV place was in a private taxi, (which is ok in covid19 times) but the rear seat had no seatbelt, there was no buckle, which in fairness, is somewhat of a common thing we found out in Cusco, but driving through the mountain for an hour without a seatbelt, it's a bit unsettling to be honest. As for the ATV/salt mine part of the trip was fantastic and I would go again.

Great atv ride and tour

ATV Quad Bike Tour to Moray Maras and Salt mines from Cusco
The tour started at 1300 with our pickup. It took at least an hour to get to the at. The guides were outstanding. They gave us a brief operation of the at and then we were on our way. The scenery is beautiful and an extensive ride to Moray. We were there for a good half hour and were given ample time to check the site out. We took the same route back to our start point. We then drove to Mares Salt site. We walked down and around the area for a good half hour. We then drove back to Cusco(1 hour and 20 minutes). The scenery is beautiful , the atv ride is great, and the guides were the best. We returned to Cusco around 1900. Highly recommend this tour.

Plan Your Next Adventure In Advance

ATV Tour to Moray, Maras and Salt Flat in the Sacred Valley from Cusco
We enjoyed the tour to Moray and the Salt Flats and the ATV ride was very fun! On this tour you buy a pass(70 soles) to enter moray and it comes with access to three other park locations that aren’t on this tour. Plan to visit the other locations on a separate tour or on your own within two days or the money you spent is wasted. Also, prepare for a rough ride in the Shuttle. The driver Washi drove super fast, hit pot holes and made fast turns. Overall our tour guide Edgar was awesome! He is very knowledgeable about each excursion location and was a great photographer! He made sure we had great photos and videos from our trip!

Maras, Moray and Salt Mines Private Tour
The guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. He always made sure we had enough time at our stops to take pictures etc so we didn’t feel rushed. He even made an unplanned stop for us to get some empanadas for the road! We got into Cusco in the morning so we missed all of the morning tours. It was nice to have an afternoon alternative.

ATV Tour to Moray, Maras and Salt Flat in the Sacred Valley from Cusco
This is a fun way to see the Salt Flats and Moray. Tour guides were great and I felt safe during the trip. Would be nice if we were offered water or snacks during the day or at least told prior to bring enough water for the tour.

Awesome gritty experience with rain and beautiful scenery

ATV Quad Bike Tour to Moray Maras and Salt mines from Cusco
This was an awesome adventure. Since I went in December, it was rather chilly, and rained heavily (understandably during wet season) on our way from Maras, and on the way to the Salt Mines. This shortened our experience, but was still a very fun activity. I went with a group of 4, with one person having no prior atv experience. This didn't make a difference, as we all stayed clear of accidents, kept our distance on the atv's, and took in some amazing sites!

We had a great time. Our guide was good. This tour is more of an ATV experience, than history. Good tour to mix in with the rest of your tours if in Cusco for several days

Day trip to Moray and Salt mines

Moray Terraces and Maras Salt Mines Day Trip
My friend and I booked this tour and it was by far our favorite tour of our trip to Cusco. Our guide took us to all the places listed, gave us the all interesting info, and then let us explore for as long as we wanted to, offered to take photos, pointed out the best views, and answered our dumb and not dumb questions, and gave us time to buy things, it was the best. Totally worth the price for the adventure. Would definitely book this tour again if I go back to Cusco!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Maras salt pans are a must-see for all first-time visitors to the area.

  • Bring your camera and sun protection.

  • You may gather your own handful of salt. However, it is best to buy small packages of Peruvian Pink Salt, as it is marketed, at the gift shop.

  • Bring cash, preferably in small bills and coins.

  • Because of the high altitude, be sure to stay hydrated and take it slow. Chewing on coca leaves or drinking coca tea helps alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness.

How to Get There

The town of Maras lies off the 28B highway, between Cusco and Ollantaytambo in the Urubamba province; Cusco is about 28 miles (45 kilometers) south. The salt pools themselves are northwest of Maras along a dusty but walkable road.

Other Sights in and Around Maras

An important town in colonial days, Maras is worth a visit to see the small square flanked by ornate Spanish-style homes and a mud-brick colonial church. Also nearby, about a 15-minute drive away, are the Moray Inca ruins, an important archeological site of mysterious stone-terraced rings.
