Choquequirao Tours & Tickets

Choquequirao
Sometimes referred to as the other Machu Picchu, Choquequirao is undoubtedly one of the least-visited Inca sites in Peru due to the difficult 2-day hike required to reach the ruins. The feat, however, is richly rewarded: The ancient site, which translates as the Cradle of Gold, is remote and spectacular and framed by Andean peaks at every angle.

The Basics
Potential plans to install a cable car line that takes visitors to the summit of Choquequirao in just 15 minutes mean that travelers are rushing to enjoy the remote sense of tranquility that is sure to be eliminated by mass tourism. Options for visiting the ruins are challenging yet varied: The shortest tours come in at four days and reveal some of Peru’s most spectacular scenery, while tours with durations of up to 10 days also cover Machu Picchu and highlights of the Sacred Valley.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Due to steep inclines and hours of uphill walking, the Choquequirao trek should only be attempted by experiences hikers.
  • Multi-day treks typically include camping equipment, all meals, a guide, and a porter to help carry luggage.
  • Altitude sickness can be a real problem for first-time visitors to Peru. Be sure to allow a couple of days to adjust to Cusco’s high altitude before any strenuous activity.

How to Get There
The jumping-off point for the Choquequirao trek is Cachora, a small town around four hours from central Cusco. Multi-day tours always include round-trip transfers from Cusco, which allows you to spend less time driving and more time focusing on the stunning Andean scenery.

When to Get There
Although rain is always possible in the highlands, the driest time of year in Peru is from April to October, when temperatures are coolest and rainfall is at a minimum.

The Best Treks in Cusco
The mountainous landscapes that surround Cusco are a mecca for hiking enthusiasts. Other challenging treks include the Lares Trek, famous for its snow-capped peaks and blue lakes; the Ausangate Trek, which takes you to some of the most remote (and vertiginous) parts of Peru; and the Vilcabamba Espiritu Pampa, which reveals the most diverse range of Andean flora and fauna.

Choquequirao Trek (4 Days)

Choquequirao Trek (4 Days)

The Choquequirao ruins were most likely built during the reign of the Inca king, Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui. They are considered to be the last bastion of resistance and refuge of the Sons of the Sun, who fled from the city of Cusco when it was under siege in 1535. Led by Manco Inca Yupanqui, they took refuge in Choquequirao. Presumably, the place was used as both a check point to access the Vilcabamba Area, and as a cultural and religious centre.
