Unexpected heavy rain made for an amazing detour
The view of Balos from up above is just incredible, definitely a must during your visit to Crete! We headed to Falassarna beach after that but it started raining heavily, our host quickly pivoted plans and we went to Elafonisi instead. This was a farther ride out so by the time we got there the day had cleared up. I recognize this was all more time-consuming but I appreciate the effort to give us a great experience in spite of the poor weather. We ended up also in this mountain resort instead for lunch, which was also a nice unexpected treat.

Balos Lagoon & Falassarna Beach - Luxury Jeep Tour with Lunch (Semi Private)
Dimitri was an excellent host, great local knowledge and really looked after every little derail You don’t go to Balos just get the Ariel view but my opinion is that falasserna is a stunning beach to swim in and lounge in the sun. Great few hours on the beach followed by a lovely lunch before we got back.

Dimitris was a great guide: super knowledgable and personable. Also a great photographer😊 (Wine/beer costs extra at lunch btw. And Balas is only to look at it, not visit it…fyi)

Balos Lagoon & Falassarna Beach - Luxury Jeep Tour with Lunch (Semi Private)
Amazing tour! Nassos was very knowledgeable in the history of the island. He shared very detailed history about Greece and Crete. He took us to some remote places to view the island and take amazing photos. The view of Balos was beautiful. The view of the lagoon is all we needed. The beach at Falassarna was perfect for swimming. It is a way better beach with less crowd, very nice restaurant and bar, lots of sunbeds and cabanas. Nassos had sunbeds reserved for us to relax and enjoy. Everything flowed very well. We relaxed, enjoyed the picturesque views, enjoyed swimming, jet skiing, and taking a ride on the sofa ski with my group. After our swim we indulged in a delightful lunch. Lunch was absolutely AMAZING! There was a variety of food, fruits, and salad for everyone to enjoy. Also, a round of drinks were included with the lunch. My group enjoyed every bit of this tour. It flowed perfectly, Nassos was friendly, and the beach was a hit!

When to Get There

Summer is the most popular time to visit Balos Beach, though the small beach can get crowded—especially in July and August. For peace and quiet, make an early start and arrive before the crowds descend upon the lagoon.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at the Balos Lagoon

The Balos Lagoon is a Natura 2000 reserve, where monk seals and loggerhead sea turtles might be spotted. It’s a prime spot for swimming and snorkeling, and scuba diving—another popular activity around the lagoon—includes the possibility of exploring the underwater wreckage of an English landing craft.
