The Basics

A guided walking tour of Kaymaklı takes visitors underground to explore the excavated ruins—including the remains of homes, kitchens, stables, storage rooms, and even a wine press—linked by tunnels and ventilation shafts. Four of the eight floors are open to the public.

Kaymakli is a popular stop on sightseeing tours of Cappadocia, often alongside attractions such as Uchisar Castle, Pasabag (Monk’s Valley), Avanos, or the Göreme Open Air Museum. You can also combine a visit to Kaymakli with a hike through the Soganli Valley or a sunrise hot air balloon flight over the fairy chimneys.

Long day but Ramsei the tour guide was awesome! He made the difference. Ramsei goes out of his way to make it a special experience. So many places to see but well worth the detour from Istanbul.

Full-Day Tour in Cappadocia with Ihlara Hiking and Underground City
I had a fantastic day. My tour guide Mehmet was a pleasure to spend time with and incredibly knowledgeable. He never rushed us at any of the sites and gave us options for how we wanted to spend the day. The lunch was delicious (on a floating restaurant on the river) and the vehicle was excellent with air conditioning throughout. Thank you Mehmet!
Better than expected

Day Tour - Southern Cappadocia Tour including Kaymakli Underground City
This tour was far better than what I was expecting. I was expecting someone to choose a few viewpoints, chasing after us and spilling some information that after a little while might become less interesting. However, our guide was very kind, very friendly and she provided very interesting information. We did stop at a few locations but she provided more than enough time to explore and our tour was quite small (which I loved) given it was the 3 of us that booked and just one more couple. The tour guide was not pushy or rushing us which was nice and she would even offer to take some of our photos even knowing some great spots herself. She took us hiking around the Red Valley which she mentioned is usually not part of other tours but that she new a nice little trail and it was worth visiting. Overall I would recommend this very much. I am unsure if it is always the same tour guide or not but the one we got was amazing!

Full-Day Tour in Cappadocia with Ihlara Hiking and Underground City
This tour was fantastic. We only paid 37 bucks because of the off season and Corona virus. I would highly recommend this tour. The only reason it's not 5 starts is because of the small money making details like, drinks are extra and "now we will hear a short presentation from this gem salesperson." Our guide was Mahmut and he was perfect. Have him a healthy tip.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Visit with a guide, as there is very little information provided on-site.

  • Allow at least an hour to visit Kaymakli.

  • Wear comfortable clothes and shoes to explore the underground city.

  • The narrow tunnels and small underground chambers can make navigating Kaymakli difficult for those who suffer from claustrophobia.

  • There are stairs, low passageways, and uneven terrain, so Kaymakli is not wheelchair accessible. Some areas may also be difficult to access for very tall or large people, or those with mobility issues.

Cappadocia’s Underground Cities

Cappadocia is home to more than 40 underground communities, which vary from small “villages” to enormous “cities.” The largest are Kaymakli and Derinkuyu, which could hold up to 3,500 people or 20,000 people, respectively. Traces of underground homes date back to Hittite times, but the elaborate cities that visitors can see today were built during the Byzantine era, and are thought to have been used as hideouts by early Christian communities during the Arab-Byzantine Wars.
