The Basics

As the clouds of brightly colored balloons gliding over Rose Valley, Pigeon Valley, and Uchisar Castle in the dawn light attest, Cappadocia’s fairy chimneys are often seen by air. Yet you can also explore the area on foot, horseback, all-terrain vehicles, and, of course, by road. Visit the Göreme Open-Air Museum fairy chimney cave to see churches that date back to the fourth century including the Karanlik Kilise, decked out in Byzantine frescoes.

Great pilot! But we didn’t get any tea or sweets. Views were beautiful and overall an amazing experience!

1-hour Hot Air Balloon Flight Over the Fairy Chimneys in Cappadocia
Great value and an amazing and enjoyable experience. Received message one day prior with pick up time, and driver promptly arrived at the promised time. Only negative, and I'm nitpicking here, is that there was no tea, coffee or breakfast that the advertisement promises. Personally, I wouldn't have partaken of it even if it were available so it isn'tan issue at all, but others may have been expecting it and been slightly disappointed.

Cappadocia Balloon Flight Over the Fairy Chimneys
It was an amazing experience, everything was perfect, actually they exceeded my expectations. I would recommend a thousand times, we ended up getting in the air for about 1 hour and half, very different from the 45 minutes / 1 hour previously informed. I am not sure if we were lucky or what, but this extra time was very well received.

The whole experience was amazing. The pilot and the ground crew where all experienced and very professional. To be part of an experience where there were so many balloons flying around was mind blowing. Highly recommend you do this if you are visiting the area.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Spend the night in a fairy chimney to experience the natural ventilation systems that have made the cave homes so popular.

  • With its underground cities, fairy chimneys, cave churches, and more, Cappadocia is worth several days if time permits. Base yourself out of Göreme, Uchisar, or Nevsehir.

  • Neither the fairy chimneys nor the balloons are wheelchair accessible.

  • Families with young children should consider bringing a back carrier instead of a stroller on a trip to the fairy chimneys due to uneven ground and stairs. Age and height restrictions apply for balloon flights.

How to Get There

The fairy chimneys are scattered across Cappadocia, a region of Central Anatolia in Turkey, about 450 miles (725 kilometers) southeast of Istanbul, but Göreme has the best-known selection. Sleeper buses run overnight from Istanbul, Izmir, and beyond; Kayseri International Airport has flights from some European and Middle Eastern cities, but Nevsehir domestic airport is closer to Göreme.

When to Get There

Hot air balloon flights are scheduled in Cappadocia year-round but are often cancelled in winter (roughly, December through early April). Cappadocia can be hot and crowded in July and August. Shoulder seasons (May-June and September-October) are a great time to visit, but avoid Islamic holidays, when many local travelers flock to Cappadocia.

What Are the Fairy Chimneys?

Also known as “hoodoos,” fairy chimneys are geological phenomena formed over many thousands of years. Rain and wind wear away the soft rock at the base, shaping the pinnacles, but the hard basalt on top erodes more slowly, forming the fairy cap. As the pinnacles are easy to hollow out, humans have long used them as homes.
