The Basics

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is made up of two different Hawaii volcanoes: Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Often visited on island tours of Hawaii that also include stops at sights such as Rainbow Falls and the Hamakua Coast, Hawaii Volcanoes can also be experienced on a coach tour, a Kilauea volcano bike tour, or during a helicopter ride.

Once there, stop in at the park's Jaggar Museum to learn about earthquakes, geology, and seismology; discover how lava still flows to the sea and occasionally covers roads; and hear the legend of Madame Pele, Hawaii's volcano goddess.

Great app, great value!
Love this app! It is a very relaxed way to experience the park. It is very complete and informative. I appreciate how it was able to start explanations automatically once we reached the spot.

Volcanoes National Park - from Kona
An amazing experience thanks to our wonderful driver, Leolani! A native Hawaiin, she was very knowledgeable about the big island's history, geology and culture. She customized our itinerary to suit our preferences. Stops included Volcano National Park, farmer's market in Hilo, a lava tube, winery, cookie store and a stop at a Hawaiin food court. Along the roadside, there were several wild animals, including goats, pigs, turkeys, a mongoose and peacock. An unexpected addition to our tour was a detour around a wildfire, but we felt safe due to her knowledge of the area and good driving skills. Highly recommend this family operated locally owned company!

Jodi thought of everything! The only thing we had to do was show up and enjoy ourselves.

Private Guide: Meet In Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Jodi (our tour guide) was absolutely wonderful in EVERY way! She was prepared for everything...snacks, water, bug repellent, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, even extra jackets. She even took pictures and sent them to us so we could just enjoy ourselves! With all the supplies and gear, you can only imagine the amount of knowledge (including little secret tid bits that very few guides know) she provided. Three of my close friends and I travel together every year. I know we will always talk about what a great time we had with Jodi!

Hawai'i's Volcanoes National Park from Hilo Only
KIMO ROCKS! Best tour guide EVER. Lovely person and so fully of island history and tours that even locals were asking him questions! Kimo went above and beyond to the point of allowing us to add onto our excursion. He knew so much about volcanos and kings ... oh goodness I could go on forever about this gem of a tour guide. He also made sure we stayed hydrated. Seriously- he made our vacation. I’m not lying. I’ll never forget him. Thank you our friend Kimo 🥰

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Big Island Highlights Small Group Tour
Great spots visited. Very well explained the history and facts. All questioned answered. Great guide.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Volcanic activity changes on a daily basis, so no two trips are the same.

  • Volcano tours get you close to the action, visiting popular sites such as Halemaumau Crater, the Kilauea Iki crater, and Devastation Trail.

  • Bring a jacket for the brisk air at the 4,000-foot (1,200-meter) Kilauea summit, and pack a rain jacket for the lush environment around the Thurston Lava Tube.

  • Some guided hiking tours go through rugged terrain, which isn't recommended for wheelchairs or travelers with limited mobility.

  • It's important to hike the area around Kilauea safely; consider traveling with a professional tour guide.

How to Get There

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a 45-minute drive south of Hilo and a 2.5-hour drive from Kona. The most popular ways to experience the park are as part of a Hawaii volcano tour, or on a self-guided driving tour of Crater Rim Drive and Chain of Craters Road.

When To Get There

Because volcanic activity is tough to predict, it's almost impossible to plan your trip around lava flow. Weather at the park can range from 45°F (7°C) with rain and wind at the summit of Kilauea to 85°F (29°C) by the shoreline; travel with multiple layers that are suitable for all conditions.

Has Kilauea Volcano Caused Any Destruction?

Kilauea has destroyed nearly 200 structures over the course of its most recent eruption. The entire village of Kalapana was covered up by the molten lava, and over 500 acres of new land have been created since 1983. As you'll learn on guided tours, parts of the ground are still very brittle due to the surface being so young.
