Beijing Aquarium (Beijing Haiyangguan)
One of the city’s most popular attractions for families, the Beijing Aquarium is featured on most sightseeing tours of the Chinese capital. You can opt for a family-friendly guided tour of the Beijing Zoo, with its famous Panda House, and the Aquarium. The tour can be combined with a rickshaw ride through historic hutongs (narrow alleys) or a visit to the Museum of Natural History. You can also visit the aquarium independently.
Things to Know Before You Go
The Beijing Aquarium is an excellent choice for families traveling with kids who love animals.
Admission to the aquarium includes zoo admission too.
Give yourself one to two hours to explore the aquarium, or more if you plan to enjoy the zoo as well.
How to Get There
The easiest way to get to the aquarium is to take the Beijing subway (Line 4) to Dongwuyuan (Beijing Zoo) Station and leave through Exit B. This puts you at the south gate of the zoo. Tickets to the aquarium are available at the north gate. You can also take a public bus to Beijing Jiaotong University Station or Dongwuyuan Station.
When to Get There
The aquarium is open daily year-round, with reduced hours from November to March. One of the best times to explore the aquarium exhibits is during the scheduled dolphin show, when up to 3,000 visitors crowd into the stadium ensuring that the other exhibits are less crowded. Avoid visiting on summer weekends and Chinese national holidays when crowds are heavy.
The Beijing Zoo
Most visitors combine the aquarium with a visit to the Beijing Zoo, because admission to both is included in one ticket. This zoological park is home to some 5,000 animals representing 450 species, including giant pandas, golden monkeys, milu deer, and northeast tigers. The animals are divided among 16 exhibit areas.
