The Basics

The bridge that spans the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi forms part of the notorious Burma Railway, a rail link between Bangkok and Myanmar that was built during the Japanese occupation of Thailand in the Second World War. The railway was built by Allied prisoners of war, and over 10,000 died of starvation, overwork, and terrible living conditions in the process. Over 90,000 local forced labourers also died during the construction.

The bridge is still a functioning rail link, and trains cross regularly on their journey to and from Bangkok. Take a train across the bridge, and visit the adjacent war museum, which examines the atrocities; to get a deeper look at the bridge’s history, join a guided tour of the area.

Floating Markets and Bridge on River Kwai Tour from Bangkok
Tour was excellent and our guide was informative. The floating markets were very interesting and we had time on our own to shop. Bridge on the River Kwai is a long bus ride from Bangkok and was a little disappointing. Important to know the history before going as the current bridge is just a modern train bridge.

Bridge on the River Kwai and Thailand-Burma Railway Tour
Our guide, Nico, spoke good English and was able to communicate the importance and history of the sites, along with other general information about things we were seeing. The guide was attentive to our comfort and safety and ensuring that we had opportunity for private exploration as well. Thank you!

Bridge on the River Kwai and Thailand-Burma Railway Tour
Really loved this trip. Picked up on time and by a lovely driver, the minibus was clean and comfortable and the guide share a few information along the way as well as the places visited. All was good, the highlights was the train ride, we actually upgraded to a first class (+200thb), it was not necessary but enjoyable, more space to enjoy both sides of the ride. Lunch was in a lovely quiet homestay and the food was fresh and great. I would recommend this tour.

Private Tour: Thai–Burma Death Railway Bridge on the River Kwai from Bangkok
I had a very nice time on my trip. My guide Prandea was full of interesting information while giving me free reign to explore on my own. The car was clean and comfortable making the long-ish drive quite pleasant. The lunch was tasty and filling and presented in a lovely outdoor pavilion. The train ride was a highlight and I particularly appreciated that this tour came with a first class ticket on the train ride. The car was comfortable and much less crowded and chaotic than second class.

Bridge on the River Kwai and Thailand-Burma Railway Tour
What a great day out. We really enjoyed the drive up to the river Kwai and the walk over over this famous bridge. The guide was so attentive and gave us great information. We loved the boat ride and train journey. Lunch was awesome. For the money which we paid we expected less but so much was included. I Asia definetly the agent to choose!

Bridge on the River Kwai and Thailand-Burma Railway Tour
Our guide Joseph took very good care of us. He was knowledgeable with the history of the Death Railway and the Bridge over the river Kwai. The experience was exvellevr. The boat ride was very entertaining. The train trip was nice through the countryside and we upgraded the tickets. We got to see Thailand from a difference perspective. The lunch at the end was delicious. Our group was small and we all enjoyed the trip, the company and the experience. I highly recommend this trip.

Private Tour to Bridge over River Kwai and Hellfire Pass incl trainride
An excellent day, a very long day! We enjoyed the trip and our guide Pan was very good. We upgraded to reserved and better seats on the train, it didn’t cost much, but we felt this should have been automatic as I’m sure most would want to do this. Be prepared for a lot of steps at Hellfire Pass (I believe you go via a golf cart). A very moving experience.

Private Tour: Thai–Burma Death Railway Bridge on the River Kwai from Bangkok
It was a great day, the guide and driver were early. There is very little traffic early in the morning. We visited the Memorial, museum and then went on a boat ride up to see the bridge. Walking the bridge was nice along with riding the train. For me, it was a great day and experience.

2 Days River Kwai Delight Package
The visit to the historic Hell Fire Pass and the memorials to the Thai- Burma Railway was well worth the time. The history of this area is important to appreciate the sacrifice by tens of thousands of prisoners of war and others. The tour was efficient and your guides were knowledgeable and friendly. The only downside was contending with the Bangkok traffic on return.

Spent a shorter amount of time than anticipated at the floating markets, but still a wonderful tour. Must have the coconut ice cream while in the markets! YUM! The visit to the Bridge on the River Kwai was very informative. Overall great experience!
