KR Market (Krishnarajendra City Market) Tours

KR Market (Krishnarajendra City Market)
The lively KR Market (also know as City Market or Krishnarajendra City Market) is Bangalore’s largest and most vibrant market. It is also one of the city’s oldest, having opened its doors in 1928. A visit here is a great way to get a taste of local life and experience the ambiance of a traditional local market.

The market’s original red and white brick building still stands, but just behind it is the newer and much larger market complex. This is the main fruit and vegetable market, but it is not confined to these buildings, and spills out onto the sidewalks and neighboring streets and lanes. A walk through the market can be an intense experience: vendors haggle loudly with their customers, and the earthy and pungent smell of vegetables, flowers and spices and the riot of brilliant colors is an exhilarating feast for the senses.

The best time to visit the market is in the early morning, when business is at its peak as shopkeepers come to stock up on goods for the day. At sunrise, the southern end of Avenue Road becomes the city’s biggest flower market. The huge piles of fresh-cut flowers of every variety and color covering the streets and sidewalks is a spectacular sight.

Practical Info:

Open daily, KR Market is located in Chickpet just off NR Road and the south end of Avenue Road, next to the Mysore Road flyover. The best time to visit is at sunrise when activity is at a peak.

Riding in a "tuk-tuk" (Autorickshaw) is a fun experience in itself and very unique to Asia. You can hop on and hop off at places of interest. You will be visiting some truly local and significant "Must see" spots along with a few off the guide book spaces that range from ancient temples, gothic churches, crafts markets, artisans, and a beautiful summer palace. This tour also includes a traditional southern Indian Brunch or Lunch which you can choose as you trail along. This is a guided experience and includes a meal. Note: Some of the tour attractions cannot be experienced on Sundays/ Public holidays as they would be closed, that being the silk weaving and dyeing units. However, we do have an alternative option to walk about the jewellers & crafts/fabric street/market and visit a unique temple known for black magic and voodoo.

A Trail Through Bengaluru's Markets

A Trail Through Bengaluru's Markets

Fresh produce, vibrant bazaars and their numerous crisscross lanes, a medley of exotic and native fruits and vegetables on display, coupled with century old tales - this trail is a mix of both the young and the old markets of Bangalore. The twin markets are strikingly different and this contrast can be clearly seen as we walk amidst the chaos of the bazaars. The trail covers the charming KR Market and the Upmarket, Russel Market. While the City Market rose from being a water body to a battlefield and finally to a market, the Russell Market came up as a bazaar for the Europeans and was the place for exotic vegetables, fruits and meat. Today each market has a character of its own. The flower market of the City is very famous with mounds of orange and yellow marigolds, sevanthiges, jasmines etc. Russell Market is famous for its dates, fresh fruits and vegetables. But these are just the icing to the cake. There's much more to explore in and around these markets. Explore with us.
