The Basics

Tanah Lot Temple is one of Bali’s most popular sights and a major pilgrimage destination for Balinese Hindus from around the island. Although non-Balinese are not allowed to enter ter, the site is often included in guided small-group or private tours to Ubud from other areas of Bali, or combined with visits to other holy sites like the Pura Ulun Danu Bratan and Pura Taman Ayun temples as well as the nearby Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. Many full-day tours to Ubud stop at the temple, oftentimes for sunset.

Tanah Lot Sunset and Monkey Forest Tour.
We had the best experience on this tour. I cannot sing enough praises to our guide, Mr. Ketut. He is a wealth of knowledge and we learned so much about Balinese culture during our tour with him. We had such a great time that we asked for a second tour the next day.

Tanah Lot Bali Temple Sunset Small Group Tour – Half Day
What a beautiful location and experience. Our driver, Agus, arrived in plenty of time and messaged us to say he had arrived. Did offer to take us to the coffee plantation beforehand but we had already been. It meant we had plenty of time to explore Tanah Lot, enjoy, take photos and do some shopping before heading to the sunset bar for actual sunset. Spectacular views and we are so pleased we took the trip.

Bali Water Temples Tour: Tanah Lot, Ulun Danu and Taman Ayun (with Lunch)
Gusman was a delightful guide and Risky was a great driver. All of the temples were lovely but be sure to budget enough time for Tanah Lot and check online for low tide times so you can try to walk across for a blessing. Consider asking for Handara Gate to be added to your trip. The tour really moves at your pace so enjoy living in the moment.

Bali Water Temples Tour: Tanah Lot, Ulun Danu and Taman Ayun (with Lunch)
This was one of the high point of our Bali tour. The twu guides specially Puthri was fantastic and knowledgeable. She provided lot of insights and took us to the best of places for tea tasting and lunch. Tour of the temples were fun and we learnt a lot of Balinese culture and religion. full marks to Purthi and her company for making the trip everlasting and wonderful.

Tanah Lot and Uluwatu Temple Private Guided Tour
It was an amazing experience visiting Tanah lot temple and Uluwatu temple, with Kecak Dance. Padang Padang Beach is picturesque. But the highlight was the two temples and the breathtaking Kecak dance in the back drop of gorgeous sunset over the magnificent Indian Ocean. Our driver Wayan was very helpful. Hassle free. He was on time , very cordial and friendly, and made sure we had a great time. Thank you Wayan. Highly recommended.

Private Half-Day Tour: Tanah Lot Sunset Trip and Dinner Packages
We booked this trip last minute and we don't regret it. Our driver was very nice and explained many things. The different places (temples, monkey forest...) were great and not as many tourists as in Ubud. We enjoyed it. We could have a drink to see the sunset at Tanah Lot and then dinner at Jimbaran (seafood). It can get a bit windy at the beach so take a sweat-shirt!

Beautiful Bike Ride

Tanah Lot Cycling Tour
We loved our bike ride through rice paddies and the tile-making village to Tanah Lot- being at the temple at sunset was amazing! You don’t have to be pro bike riders to do this, the distance is not that far, and there are no hills. Our guide had lots of interesting information about growing rice and making the clay tiles, and he knew where to take good pictures! Some of the English was lost in translation I think, but it did not affect our enjoyment of the trip- we’d definitely do another ride with this company!

Bali Water Temples Tour: Tanah Lot, Ulun Danu and Taman Ayun (with Lunch)
Amazing temples, only wish we had more time at ulun danu temple as this was the one I really wanted to visit. We literally had half an hour there, could of easily spent a couple of hours there. If I had known this I would not have gone to the silver and coffee places which were not on our itinerary but the rep recommended the visits. I would rather have spent this time at the temples. The rep was lovely thou, very knowledgeable and friendly.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • A Tanah Lot sunset is a must for first-time visitors.

  • Bring your camera for the perfect sunset photo opportunity.

  • While visitors can walk out to the Hindu temple at low tide, non-Balinese are not allowed to enter the temple itself.

  • Expect traffic to back up for several miles during the pre- and post-sunset rush.

How to Get There

Tanah Lot Temple is located about 10 miles (15 kilometers) from Seminyak. While it’s possible to get to the temple on your own by taxi from Ubud or the southern coast, it’s most commonly visited as part of a guided sightseeing or sunset tour.

When to Get There

The best time of day to visit Tanah Lot Temple is at sunset, when rose-colored skies meet the blue waters that surround this popular religious attraction. During low tide, visitors can walk to Tanah by following a winding path lined with bustling souvenir stands. Be advised that it’s more difficult to reach the temple during high tide, when travelers are prohibited from getting near parts of the structure closest to the water.

Bali’s Directional Temples

Tanah Lot is one of nine directional temples on the coast of Bali island that were built to protect the island from evil spirits. Besides Tanah Lot, other directional temples worth visiting include Pura Besakih (known as the “mother temple”) and the clifftop Uluwatu.
