The Basics

Waiheke Island is most often visited on day tours from Auckland. The most popular experiences include food tours, wine tasting excursions, adventure tours—and simply spending time on one of the many sandy ocean beaches. Wine enthusiasts should choose a wine-tasting tour to visit some of the nearly 30 wineries, many of which have locavore restaurants attached and make for the perfect way to enjoy a vineyard lunch. Adventure and culture also abound, with ziplining, hiking, and eco tours available for exploring the island’s lush forests and nature preserves, plus ancient Maori terraces and cooking pits to be discovered on cultural bike tours.

Superb
Absolutely superb tour on this stunning island. Graham, our hospitable and knowledgable Guide, took us to three welcoming and picturesque wineries - Kennedy Point, Casita Miro and Obsidian. The three tastings were informative, entertaining and generous. Highly recommended.

Not only did we try some spectacular wines, we learned so much about the history of wine in Waiheke. Wayne was a thoughtful tour guide who made the day that much more special!

Waiheke Island Art Walk
The art walk was an interesting group of New Zealand artists. It was quite a bit of walking and some uphill however the tour guide really went out of her way to accommodate since it was more walking than we expected( 2 of us were over 80 years old). She obtained her boss' car, which we did not expect, and took us between some of the places and also to 3 artist's homes. We had lunch( the guide had purchased sandwiches earlier) at the third home. All in all it was a great day. We did tip, which is not necessary, because of the auto which was not part of the deal. Even then she said it was not necessary but we insisted ! EXCELLENT DAY !!!!!!

Waiheke Island Wine Day Tour
Two words: Amazing tour!! The three vineyards chosen were magnificent and the food at Casita Miro was out of this world. Each winery had a beautiful story to tell as well as a beautiful view of the island. At the end of the trip, Jean and team helped my wife and I secure a handbag that was left in the island!! Overall, team was amazing and I highly recommend this tour!

The best tour of Waiheke

Full-Day Tour of Waiheke Island with Wine Tastings
Had such a great day in Waiheke with Nicky! Very thorough instructions regarding the Ferry and where to find her. Nicky was very knowledgeable on the island and the sweetest person. We made several stops at local beaches, three lovely boutique wineries, and even had some time to shop a bit. We were a group of four and had the tour all to ourselves as the maximum number is six. I chose this tour after reading the reviews of others. I don’t like to be shuttled around in large tourist groups. The best way to see the island in my opinion. Couldn’t recommend more.

Full-Day Tour of Waiheke Island with Wine Tastings
Overall the tour was really well done. The guide knows a lot about the island and took a couple of extra stops where I did not see a lot of other tour groups. We went to the local market and were allowed to shop, we also stopped on a popular lookout and drove down to the beach. The wineries were very friendly with our guide and the tour. The only issue we had was that the van broke down at our first location. This forced the group to split up and go into two separate cars as her husband was able to bring a car down to us and one of the workers at the winery let our guide borrow her car! The guide then bought us a bottle of wine for the table and also was willing to drop us off at individual locations as opposed to taking us back to the ferry. Overall great experience!

During the less crowded month of March, some wineries offer additional experiences like the chance to stomp grapes or sample special vintages in honor of harvest time. Each Saturday from 8:30am to 1pm, a popular art and farmers market pops up in Ostend.
