Tiritiri Matangi Island

Tiritiri Matangi Island, Auckland, North Island

The Basics

Providing habitat for about 80 species of birds, the island rings with varieties of birdsong rarely heard on the mainland. Choose a day trip from Auckland that includes a guided walk on the island. You’ll learn to identify the birds and their calls, such as the New Zealand robin and the saddleback. Then take a short walk to Hobbs Beach to take a swim and spy on blue penguins in their nesting boxes.

If you want to experience a NZ bird paradise, this is it!
Really enjoyed our day trip[to Tiritiri Matangi. The beautiful weather helped. Ferry ride was smooth. Tour was really interesting with a very knowledgeable guide. The bird life was astounding, with highlights being seeing swarms of bellbirds feeding, peeping at penguins in a nesting box, having a ruru in a cabbage tree pointed out and the best -a pair of quietly cheeping takahe strolling along muttering to each other. Beautiful dawn chorus like birdsong in the bush- wow!

Tiritiri Matangi Island Day Trip from Auckland with Optional Guided Walk
Fantastic Trip, Note to the motion sickness wary (stock up on Dramamine - if the sea looks as though it could get rough) from Auckland to the Island. A Guide is recommended on the island initially as it gives a great introduction to the history of the island and what to look out for in the way of birdlife. It's a short day with the ferry leaving at 3:30 so spend as much time as you can looking around.

Tiritiri Matangi Island Day Trip from Auckland with Optional Guided Walk
Having a guide to inform was really valuable. We had a small group of 5 so we were able to question our guide. Passionate volunteer guide Sahrah made our trip memorable. We saw many species of birds which we could photograph. Thank you.

Tiritiri Matangi Island Day Trip from Auckland with Optional Guided Walk
This trip to one of the Hauraki Gulfs 'treasure islands' has to be one of the regions best kept secrets! I felt I was getting two trips for the price of one. The ferry ride and the island trip itself. The one and a half hour ferry ride to the island was both very comfortable and made so interesting with skipper Bob's commentary. Once at Tiri, we met up with our excellent guide Toni, who gave us a brief history of the island before a group of about 8 of us set off. Toni's knowledge of the history and bird life of Tiri made the walks memorable. There are four walks to choose from and you don't need to be super fit for any of them! We did two walks in the course of the day, saw lots of native bird life and a Tuatara which was a highlight for me. There is a very nice communal area to sit down (with you own packed lunch - Tiri is a wildlife sanctury so all food is bought in), have a complementary cup of tea or coffee. I would recommend going with a guide - great value at $10 to get the most out of this fascinating and beautiful island, but it is not compulsory.

Most memorable moments were being guided around and being told the names of the birds we saw. Also a complimentary cup of tea at the visitors centre was much appreciated.

Tiritiri Matangi Island Day Trip from Auckland with Optional Guided Walk
I saw birds that I had never seen before. The whole day (boat trip over, exploring the island, the volunteer guides) was one of the high lights of our 2 week trip!

When to Get There

Birdlife is active year-round, and each season has something different to offer visitors. Spring is best for early-morning birdsong, while late summer is ideal for observing fledglings. Kowhai trees flower in late August, and 1,000-year-old pohutukawas (aka New Zealand Christmas trees) bloom in December.
