Parthenon

Athens Acropolis, Athens

The Basics

The best way to visit the Parthenon is on a walking tour of the Acropolis of Athens, including neighboring ruins such as the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Erechtheion. First-time visitors to Athens can also combine a visit with a city sightseeing tour; a half-day trip to the Temple of Poseidon and Cape Sounion; or even a food tasting city tour. History buffs can tack on a tour of the Ancient Agora or a visit to the New Acropolis Museum.

Great tour with a passionate guide, Arthemis. We left early for the tour as it was going to be a hot and crowded day. Arthemis made sure everyone understood the history behind these ancient monuments. I highly recommend it!

Acropolis monuments & Parthenon Walking Tour with Optional Acropolis Museum
Stelios, The tour guide was exceptional! he enhanced an already spectacular location with his extensive knowledge of history, culture and archaeology. The Parthenon was very busy but that’s to be expected in summer. Stelios found ideal places to stop and talk with us at length. We appreciated his brisk walking pace as opposed to some tours which plod along! The tour operator Athens Walks was very easy to work with and customer service oriented.

Highly recommend a trip to the acropolis as no trip to Athens will be complete without it. I recommend if traveling at this time to just go to the tickets office directly at the acropolis as no lines in these times of COVID. No libes anywhere. After a visit here go to tge museum.

Very good guide, very knowledgeable. Perhaps too much information, a little slow in the beginning. But overall it was a very good tour and we learned a lot.

Dorina was an awesome guide. You really can’t appreciate, in my opinion, the acropolis, Parthenon, and particularly the museum without having someone there to teach you. Very well done tour and would do it again!

Did the combo with Acropolis and Museum. Glad we did! The air conditioning in the museum was a lifesaver after the sweltering tour of the Acropolis! Dorina was an excellent guide and was engaging with our two kids (11 and 14). Knowledgeable and navigated us deftly around the tourists and other groups. We definitely recommend.

Athens Half day Christian Tour | Apostle Paul first Spoke - Acropolis, Parthenon
Kostos and Vicky came to our hotel and gave us the most marvelous, comprehensive tour of Athens in one day. We were able to See the Parliament House, the Plaka District, and the National Library. We drove to Lycabettus and had the most beautiful view. We visited the Olympic Stadium. We had a wonderful tour of the Acropolis, the Areopagus and the Parthenon/Acropolis museum. Kostos was a courteous and careful driver, able to get us exactly where we needed to be. Vicky toured many places with us. She was so informative and a great story teller. It was a delightful day!

An Awkward Encounter with England

In the early 19th century, when Athens was under Turkish rule, sculptures from the Parthenon were sold to Englishman Lord Elgin. The artifacts, nicknamed the ‘Elgin Marbles’ are now on display in London's British Museum, but they remain a point of contention for the Greek government, which still insists they should be returned.
