The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy's top destinations, largely thanks to perfect relaxation conditions and outdoor adventures that can be tailored to any activity level. Here are some of our favorite ways to spend time outside on the Amalfi Coast.
Water Activities
Swimming is, of course, an easy way to beat the heat. Plant yourself on the beach so you can take a dip, or see more of the area on a boat tour around the coast's nearby islands, including Capri, where you can climb into a smaller boat to explore eery sea caves. Learn to catch the fish that locals have been fishing for generations, and even keep some of your catch for dinner. Travelers can also go sailing, snorkeling or diving in the waters off the Amalfi Coast, or opt for a truly romantic experience with a sunset cruise.
Land Adventures
Hiking is one of the best ways to see the hills that rise up over the towns of the Amalfi Coast, and the best-known trail in the area is the Path of the Gods. Hikers can also head out to Mt Vesuvius, a short distance away, or embark on more leisurely walking tours of the coastal towns and islands to get to know the area from the ground up. A visit to Ravello is particularly rewarding on foot, with unforgettable views over the water seen from the gardens that sit at the town's edge.
Cultural Experiences
Some of the most popular attractions along the Amalfi Coast involve being outdoors. Walking through the nearby ruins of Pompeii or Herculaneum can give you a better idea of what ancient Roman life was like. Combine that with the ancient Greek ruins at Paestum, and you've got the remains of two incredible cultures not far from one another or from the Amalfi Coast. It's also possible to dig into the region's culinary bounty with a farm visit, or find out how volcanic soil affects the taste of wine with a trip to a vineyard near Mt Vesuvius. You can even learn all about finding the prized fungus known as the truffle on a hunt through the forest with an experienced local.
