We will stand over 6,400 m (21,000 ft) summit, staring at the vast expanse of peaks stretching north and south. Later the same evening, freshly-showered and clean-shaven, we celebrate our succes over a few beers in a folk music show.

At 6438 meters, Illimani is the tallest mountain in the Cordillera Real and is known as the guardian of the city of La Paz, as the mountain can be observed towering over the city in the distance from innumerable viewpoints. Illimani is an imposing mountain with multiple snow capped peaks and enormous glaciers and the climb itself to the highest of those peaks is spectacular. Illimani is a demanding climb recommended for those with prior experience on steep, icy glaciated terrain.

Huayna Potosi is Bolivia’s most popular major peak in the Cordillera Real. Located at just 32 km from the city of La Paz, Huayna Potosi is known for its ease of access and imposing beauty as well as the fact that it is 88 meters over the magic 6000 meter figure. Huayna Potosi can be climbed by beginners with a competent guide and technical equipment. Beginners yes, but fit beginners; it’s quite steep toward the end and it’s a tough climb, but well worth the effort!
