Trullo Sovrano Tours

Trullo Sovrano
The only trullo built on two levels in the UNESCO-listed village of Alberobello, the Trullo Sovrano is one of the most striking examples of the unique stone dwellings with conical roofs. Learn what it might have been like to live in one as you explore the re-created period living area, kitchen, and bedroom inside.

The Basics

The Rione Monti neighborhood in Alberobello’s historic center contains more than 1,000 trulli, and the Trullo Sovrano towers above its neighbors with a roof more than 45 feet (14 meters) tall. Kids especially enjoy experiencing what it was like to live inside the humble, fairy-tale-ready cottage.

Visit the Trullo Sovrano during a walking tour of Alberobello that takes in neighborhood highlights, or on your own by purchasing a skip-the-line ticket in advance. Alberobello day trips and tours often include stops in nearby Locorotondo, Polignano a Mare, Conversano, or the Castel del Monte fortress.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Alberobello’s trulli are a photographer’s delight, particularly the Trullo Sovrano.
  • The Trullo Sovrano is partly accessible to wheelchairs on the ground floor; the upper floor isn’t.
  • The museum souvenir shop stocks a variety of books about Alberobello and the Itria Valley.

How to Get There

Trullo Sovrano is located in Rione Monti in Alberobello, and isn’t easy to reach by public transit. Get there by car or on a guided tour that includes transportation.

When to Get There

Alberobello is one of the most famous destinations in Puglia, and gets overrun with bus tours at midday. Stop by in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst of the crowds.

The Trulli of Alberobello

Alberobello’s round trulli—whitewashed cottages topped with conical slate roofs marked with runelike designs—are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the top attractions in Itria Valley. Nowadays, the trulli include souvenir shops, restaurants, cafés, and holiday homes.
